Can anyone recommend an random orbital polisher you use for your vehicle that doesn't cost a whole paycheck? I'm looking for one that's good, but not top of the line like Flex or Torq (though would love to have one, just too $$$ for my taste).

Do cheap polishers you find at Wal-Mart, Auto-Zone, Advance Auto Parts etc., for around $30-$55 work just as well long as you put more $$$ into the pads/polish products?

Thanks in advance!

I've only ever used the Porter Cable 7224 and it has been rock solid for 6 years. Got my recommendation off of AutoGeek.com back when I researched it. Not sure saving on the cost of this will save you money in the long run.

yes, good applicators and products help. I guess it just depends on where you see the value. I can spend $80-100 on applicators and products every single year - but I do take care of three cars.

I was just about to make a thread about orbital polishers.

Today I picked up a 6" unit from Harbor Freight for $60 with coupon.

Tried it today and that machine kicks ass!

I used Meguire's Ultimate Compound.

The massive black paint streak on my rear bumper (silver paint) is now gone.

The huge swath of scratches traveling down both passenger doors is now nearly invisible.

Even buffed the wheel well black trim pieces, they're black now, no treatment needed.

It's a very powerful machine, OPM from 2000 to 6400 or so. Loads of torque, doesn't bog down on anything. Even came with an extra set of brushes for the motor.

Couldn't be more pleased.

6 in. 5.7 Amp Heavy Duty Dual Action Variable Speed Polisher

Went ahead and disassembled the machine, cleaned out the tiny amount of cheap factory grease from the gears, loaded the gears with Tufoil "Lightning Grease", loaded the contacts with DeoxIT, put it all back together and now this machine is smoother and quieter. It was loud as hell before, and vibrated my hands like crazy. Much more refined operation now.

I got this tip from some forum.

Works great.
