Street Racing Believed To Have Been A Factor In Fatal Collision

LOS ANGELES (CBS) ― A motorist was killed Saturday in Hollywood in a fiery crash that may have been caused by two other motorists street racing in BMWs, authorities said.

The driver of an Infiniti was making a left turn at Sunset Boulevard and Highland Avenue at 4:25 a.m. when the Infiniti was struck by a speeding BMW whose 24-year-old driver may have been drunk and racing with the driver of another BMW on Sunset, police said.

The collision caused a fire and another vehicle behind the Infiniti was struck by debris.

The fatal victim in the Infiniti was a male, according to the coroner's office.

A male passenger in the Infiniti suffered burns over about half his body, said Cecil Manresa of the Los Angeles Fire Department.

The BMW driver suffered neck and back injuries, and a female in her 20s suffered scrapes from an airbag that deployed in the crash, he said.

Witnesses said they saw the driver of a second BMW drive away, and that motorist was being sought by police.

If the BMW drivers were street racing, they could both face murder charges, authorities said.

Passerby Nathan Smith said he spotted a burning vehicle and tried to help the two people trapped inside.

"I pulled the one guy out from the passenger side of the car, I pulled him out, saved him, but I couldn't get to the driver," Smith said.

Witnesses said the two BMW's may have been street racing when the deadly accident occurred.

"When I saw those two guys just going at it, just like racing, I was like these guys are going to end up killing each other ... and they lost control, it happened so fast, and the flames started going, it was crazy," Chris Yniquiz said.

Eastbound Sunset Boulevard in the heart of Hollywood was closed to traffic for nearly 12 hours as traffic investigators reconstructed the crash.

Sunset Boulevard from Mansfield Way to La Palmas Avenue reopened at 4 p.m., according to the LAPD West Traffic Division.

wow, that sucks. It's a shame it happens everyday, be careful out there all. The impact must have been pretty crazy to get to the gas tank.

RIP...that is just ridiculous...another innocent live lost.

i honestly have no remorse for the drunk driver(s) that caused this though...drinking and driving is honestly IMO just one of the stupidest things alive you can do. i hope he gets what he deserves.

+1 on that, too many times drunk drivers cause lives. Unfortunately they never get caught on the first time out, thus a habitual situation that makes them feel like it's OK to keep doing the same thing; drive drunk. A person DUI has done this more than once, eventually it catches up. Hopefully it won't be a situation like this one we're all are reading/discussing now! My best wishes, prayers and condolences go out the the innocent and the families that have to endure this tragic event.

Says the person(s) responsible may be prosecuted for a list of charges including murder  Sooo after this event his life is pretty much in the shitter. Knowing that your actions killed somebody, and then that you're gettin ruined over it with jail time... all for those 2-5 minutes of racing...

Wondering if the gas tank exploding on the FX has something to do with the recall from a couple of years back. Remember the recall were they have to drop the drive shaft, rear axle and the gas tank to correct the defected fuel lines?

ummmmmmmmmm link to this recall? I need to know if mine needs to have this done

This is the only thing I found related to the fuel.....unless I missed it.

INTRODUCTION

Infiniti has determined that some 2003–2004 model year Infiniti G35 sedan/coupe vehicles and 2003-2006
model year Infiniti FX35/45 vehicles may have a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety. There is the
possibility that the fuel filler hose may crack and result in fuel leakage from the hose while refueling. If an
ignition source is present, a fire could occur. In addition, fuel vapor hoses may crack and cause the malfunction
indicator lamp to come on. To prevent this condition from occurring, Infiniti is conducting a Voluntary Safety
Recall Campaign to replace the fuel filler and vapor hoses with new ones.
