Question about motor oil longevity

I know people say time is just as important as miles so I have a question.

Last time I change my motor oil was back in July which was almost half a year ago. But the thing is I only have 1800 miles on the motor oil because the FX doesn't get driven as much anymore. I usually do motor oil changes every 3750 miles.

You guys think I should change it anyways? I'm running Mobil 1 extended performance synthetic so I figured it wouldn't be a big deal.

I have a couple of cars that I drive rarely and they still get oil changes every six months. I drive them less than 2000 miles a year. I know that some people will say that it is a waste of money, but to me it is cheap insurance.

I don't know about that specific oil, but pretty much any synthetic is good for at least 6000 miles and 6 months rather than the bs they feed you when you get it changed. Even if you aren't driving it, I would change it at 6 months.

natural oil would require more frequent changes both timewise and mileage wise.

Yes change your oil. I've seen oil stain and turn to slight sludge from not being used with low miles. Not running your car that much is actually worse on the car than one with lots of miles.

Agreed, change it especially with the cold weather upon us now. I'm overdue for mine myself.

I like the way you put it "cheap insurance", it's only ~$30-40 for the oil and filter, and certainly won't hurt anything.

I believe that the new synthetic oils can go way pass 5K miles, however the oil carries dirt and deposits to the oil filter which get clogged and needs to be changed or it goes into bypass mode and let all the dirt recirculate back into the engine, especially the small oil filter on the FX35/45. So I will change my oil every 4K or so with syn oil even if I could squeeze 2K or more miles on it.

exactly why I use the mobil 1 extended filter.

ya thats the one, i think its slightly bigger than the fx35 one

I would skip the early oil change and take the FX for a nice drive, get the engine temperature up to and at operating temp for a good 40 minutes to an hour, that will make sure all the moisture and condensation is baked out of all parts of the FX, changing the oil cause it sits is not doing anything but adding more waste oil to be dumped, I would also get a used oil analysis, it tells you a lot.

thats what i use too but i get mobil 1 110 fx45 filter

Do you add more oil during oil changes to make up the different in oil filter size to maintain proper engine oil pressure? The first gen FX45 used to be listed as holding 7 quarts during an oil change, but it later has been changed to need 6.5 quarts to avoid a low speed shudder. So, if I use the larger mobile one filter, I wonder if I can fill it up to 7 quarts without any problems and maintain the proper oil pressure?
