Power Steering Fluid Swap (Using Fluid Transfer Pump)

Good question, I couldn't find anything in the service schedules except to just top it off if needed. I figured it couldn't hurt to keep it somewhat clean.

i guess after the initial change , we just need need to check it every 2-3 oil change to see how dirty it is. if you see is too dark/dirty change it the next time you have to do a oil change. i think that would be what im going to do..

just finish doing this fluid is almost clear.. i will drive the FX around and do one more flush in a week.. thanks Jeff for the DIY!

I did one swap yesterday but ran out of fluid (because I'm a dummy and bought the real power steering fluid, which comes in 12oz bottles) and time. i'm going to try to grab some Dexron later today so I can continue the process.

Here's swap #1. Pretty gross but not as bad as I was expecting:

i haven't done this one my due to the same reason. what I do want to know is that if I rotate Dexron thrice and finally fill it with OEM Nissan power steering fluid, is it gonna be ok or should i not mix them?

Not sure. My thought though is that it would be pretty difficult to completely remove one kind of fluid in order to replace it with the alternate fluid. Ergo, they must be close enough to mix safely. Bear in mind that is just an assumption of mine.... Fwiw, I'm totally going to mix them. I assume fxlr8 mixed them in his M as well...

i bought castrol tranny fluid recommended for nissan, 4 swaps and final filling with OEM ps fluid. seems to be ok as far as mixing goes.

as far as swap is concerned, you should be in the clear. since you said no name brand, i suggest you put recommended oil at the end of this process.

Do you think i can use a dex III MERCON ATF that ford uses for there tranny?

Here's mine after 1.5 swaps. I thought it looked a little too red when I was taking it out for the second swap, so I thought a little more time to dilute would be good. It's hard to say though because it always looks red in small amounts, but then once it went into the bottle it turned that dark black. I don't think mine has ever been changed.

I did this a few months ago after I was quoted $120 to replace dirt pwoer steering fluid. I bought thisinexpensive Multi-Use Transfer Pump http://www.harborfreight.com/multi-use-transfer-pump-66418.html and 3 qts of Dexron III ATF. Each morning before starting the engine I used the pump to empty the power steering pump fluid reservoir and then I added Dexron III ATF to the reservoir full line. The next morning, I would repeat the process. I did this until the fluid looked new which took 6 days for me.
