Photos of body color matching?

I met with the owner of a great body shop today. Nice guy. Waiting on an estimate. I doubt the cost will steer me away because this place does good quality work. They're backed up until the 1st week of December. 70 cars. My intentions were for a total re-paint but he thinks that's way overkill and was surprised how well maintained it is. For a total repaint, they disassemble everything on the exterior, everything.
He said they'll buff the whole car out and address the minor issues which are a few dings, replace some molding and trim and deal with road rash on the front end and side mirrors. They'll do whatever I want with the lower black plastic. He likes the idea of matching it to the body color and has done this many times with many colors. I've got 4 scenarios;
1. Gloss black grill and lower plastic, as it is now, just primed/filled/smoothed, sanded and painted.
2. Body color grill and gloss black on lower plastic.
3. Gloss black grill and body color lower plastic
4. Gloss black or body color grill, rocker panels and both bumpers black and mud guards and wheel well trim body color.
Either way, the chrome strip at the bottom of the doors will stay. If the rockers are painted the body color, we might remove the black rubber "not so weather sealing" weather seal strip that's on the bottom of each door. The black trim on the tops of each side window is not painted metal and is faded, so those will get replaced. Looks fine from a distance but not up close and drives me nutz. Painting the plastic body color, whether it's everything or just the mud guards and wheel well trim should help my shitty little 18's and soon-to-be 29" diameter tires out a bit, helping to fill up the wells.

These photos are all I've come up with so far. I know there's more, there's gotta be, but I haven't found any yet. Dude from Saudi Arabia has a silver FX with plastic below painted silver but no mud guards. Didn't respond to my request for photos of his ride:cry:. It'd be great if you guys can point me in the right direction.

Is it just me or does the FX look really odd without rails and mud guards?

I'm thinking about this area that is black, from 1' past the exhaust tips on either side. If everything were painted silver, I wonder how it would look with only this section painted black? The outline is already molded into the bumper. They'd paint it from point to point. The molded outline fades away as it travels to the underside of the bumper and they'd just follow it with tape and paint everything in between black.

While you have it in, I would paint the window trim instead of replacing it... The new stuff will fade as well... Decide whether you wanted painted black or color matched...

For the lower trim, have them sand it down smooth before painting it, if you color match... Looks really weird when the bumper is fully painted but you have 2 textures...

No mud flaps a roof rails actually looks really good when the FX is lowered... I'll be removing my rails, probably next summer... I want to buy some dynamat and install it while I have the roof liner pulled to remove the rails...

The window trim appears to be plastic taped on. He said better to replace it and wouldn't recommend painting it. It's the upper most piece of trim above each window. All the rest is good.
They'd prime (filler) all the plastic, sand, prime then sand again. They've done this many times. The front bumper has some gouges from road debris that need filling also.
My fear is changing too much. The designers did such a great job with the FX, I don't want to step on their toes so to speak, and ruin it. I don't care for the silver photo above at all but the white one isn't too bad. Maybe it's the size or color of the wheels? I do like the 1st large photo above. Guess I'm gonna have to find some time & learn how to photo shop.
edit - by 1st large photo I mean the silver one with painted lowers which may be one of the photos that aren't visible.

Your photos don't show on my computer so I don't know what you're referring to... Either way, just know that the trim will fade again... I've already had mine replaced and it's a problem with the 1st Gens...

You can't see the photos? I copied and pasted. Strange. I'll take your advice and push to get them painted rather than replaced.

That's odd. Don't know what to say or do? Copied and pasted them all.

If all photos are loaded here on this site, then I unfortunately have no advice to give. I've even tried viewing with 3 different broswers (Chrome, IE and Safari.)

Wonder what other photos I've posted that aren't visible. If these are it then I have to assume that it's the source I copied them from.

Here's a good one LOWEST VIP FX on THE EastCoast(painted trims,vip modulars,etc)
Not exactly my bag of chips but admirable nonetheless. To each his own. Can't imagine everyone liking all the same shit. How boring would that be. I can appreciate anything that's been done well, regardless of style. If this guys still around, tell'em to remove those tabs that once were part of the lower engine cover with a razor blade and a steady hand.

Hope this one's visible. Larger photo of one of those I think you guys couldn't see.

And another white one. I think I'm sold on changing the black to silver but I might have to change the roof rails from black to silver to balance it out.

Not too radical. This one's a little closer to my speed than the low-low above. Actually looks a little more conservative than black on the bottom. Huh. For whatever reason, the mud guards/splash gaurds, whatever the hell they're called, they make it look sportier. I'm thinking silver, not chrome, but silver roof rails and do the antenna in silver as well so it fades away. Don't know if silver or black would be best for the grill. The Infiniti emblem is gonna be replaced with a new one and kept chrome. Thing took a beat'n with the rest of the bumper over the years.

This must be Rookie & Co. doing some incognito shit back when it was still silver.

Finding a body shop I feel good about bringing the FX to and leaving behind some grands seems to be almost as tough as it is to find a reliable shop to replace the one I used to go to which is now out of business. Been to three body shops. Got one estimate but shop is extremely busy and I cannot get the guy to cooperate on details via email. Have 12/11/17 set as a drop off date. He probably doesn't see my cancellation call to the front desk coming soon. Too bad. Went to another shop last week. Good reviews, nice shop but the estimator is a flake. They're out. Went to a shop today and winner winner chicken dinner. The guy actually gave me a tour. What a concept. Seems pretty standard practice to me but he was the only one of three. Waiting on an estimate. He said regarding changing the bottom color from black to silver, there's no way to get an exact match, so there will be a noticeable difference between the old and new silver. Every body shop and even the paintless dent removal guy I had over yesterday is steering me away from a total repaint which is great, more $ left in my pocket, but this leads me to think my only option is to paint the bottom gloss black after all prep. Grill color still up in the air, black or body color. There's road rash all over the front bumper and front of the hood so they need to prep/fill and repaint the bumper, hood and blend into the fenders, so painting the grill silver would match. I've never seen a body color painted grill on an FX before, except for black.

Paint roof rails & lower molding brilliant silver, leave spoiler and around windows black, leave all that's chrome chrome, replace grill with t-rex and leave finish alone and possibly paint bumped out area encompassing exhaust tips gloss black and after paints fully cured, paint correction on original paint, clear bra up front and ceramic coating all around including wheels.
and to think I used to color in the lines. Ha.

The extension in the bumper around the exhaust just gets lost when it's black.

The area around the fog lights really shows up when painted silver.

I'm considering a different route...

This grill will look good with silver top and bottom. Can plasti-dip, anodize or paint black or silver. Former plastic grill support on both sides shows through even when painted black so that will be removed.

My fx was hit this January and since it was in the shop I decided to paint all the black trim to match the body. It came out great I’m glad I did it made the car look new. I also had the shop remove the front license plate bracket for a more clean look. I’ll post pics later tonight.

Sounds cool. Can't wait for the photos. I'm having a great amount of difficulty landing a quality shop that I can be confident in. I think everyone's too busy where I live. One shop estimated $5k but not just to paint the lower molding. Their communication sucks. Got another estimate today (only took the schmuck 2 weeks) and he's at $7,300? That's a 45% difference for the same work. Both shops very highly rated but the first one is very VERY busy and the second is SLOW. Gee, I wonder why?
I am now strongly considering wrapping the whole damn shabang myself. Then I'm in control of the process and I like that, being the control freak that I am. The only pita area I can predict will be around the door handles as I think I'd have to take them off.
