Hey guys! Thinking of painting my grill black. Does anyone know what I should sand with and paint with? I have a black car so if I don't get KH3 paint it might look weird. Has anyone done this on their 2nd gen at home? Is it alright if I use just Duplicolor's Universal Black paint? Not willing to go to a shop to get this done... Please let me know what I should do! Thanks!

You can sand it down and use spray paint. KH3 is just black, so it's relatively easy to match. Sand with a higher grit, maybe 800, you're not looking to sand off anything, just get the surface rough enough for paint to stick.

Why are you so against a shop? It's not that expensive for a grill, maybe $100 at a lot of shops and it will match. I paid $80 to have my grill done in KH3 and it matches perfectly. Spray paint will never look as good as having a shop do it. And it takes a long time to properly sand the grill down. It's also an area prone to chips, so you really want a good paint job on there.

If you don't want to go to a shop, maybe try plastidip. I personally hate the look, but it's much easier than using regular spray paint, no sanding needed. If you don't like it, just peel it off, you haven't ruined your grill.

I did plastidip the winter I got my new headlights since the chrome grille looked so out of place, its now been two years of my grille looking stupid and I havn't fixed it. Every year I say i'll get it properly painted in the spring and it never happens.

Just get it properly painted right off the bat, the Plastidip looks stupid.

Can't powder coat plastic (well there are a handful of shops that can do it), you typically need metal to conduct since that's how they get the powder to stick. They electrify the piece. Most of the spray paint clears are the same. But you're going to have to wet sand and polish for it to look decent. It's a lot of work to do right. It's one of those things that I never saw as cost effective. Pay $100 or so to have a shop do it, or spend 8 hours doing it yourself to try and get it right. Then even if you get it right, spray paint isn't as durable as what a shop will spray. So you get chips in it and have to redo it.

Mine is dipped black but still sporting chrome emblem. I think it looks great. I am not a fan of doing a large part dipped but small parts work perfect. I mean if you want gloss black then plastidip is not what you would use anyway.

Plastidip is great for trying out a color before full-on committing to a paint job that you may end up not liking. I plastidipped my emblems, liked how it turned out, now I'm going to get them, including grill, accents and door handles, professionally done.

Great way to try before you buy!
