No need to completely remove the chrome. I use the 3M brown Scotch-brite abrasive pad to scuff the chrome. I use the Eastwood 2K Clear. The Eastwood clear is 2 parts with a harderner and clear in one rattle can. You activates (mix it) when you ready to use. It only has a shelf life of up to 48 hours. Any left in the can will harden cannot be used.
yes i did all of this at home in my garage. I scuffed it down with some sandpaper then I used 3 light coats plastic based primer which just primer that is for plastic surfaces. after it dried i wetsanded with 2500 grit to make it smooth and let it dry. I sprayed 4 coats of rustoleum gloss black high performance enamel and then 4 even coats of krylon clear. I plan to wetsand the pieces i painted and buff them out after the paint cures because in some areas it did get not shiny and there was slight orange peel. and i did the same with my grille. also i cant stress enough to do this on a not windy warm sunny day! It makes things a lot easier.
Good job everything came out nice. I just used rattle cans to paint my wheels and the next project is a DIY full chrome delete. Did you take your handles off to paint them? I didn't remove my tires when I painted my wheels it just took a lot of patience applying painters tape to mask everything off.
