if you seen the work and materials involved in doing this the right way you'd understand why it is so expensive. the front bumper has to be removed, the rear bumper removed, the rocker moldings and the lower door moldings all removed. all 4 wheel opening moldings removed....
all of the texture on all of these parts need to be sanded completely smooth, then they need to be sealed and primed with a special primer... the complete bumpers then need to be painted to do it right, not just the lowers, and of course all the other parts painted too, and then it needs to be all assembled again, wet sanded and polished, etc... it is impossible to do this job correctly in a real shop without spending ~2k or even a little more really depending on condition and color... you do get what you pay for... color match and finish quality is a big factor, if in the end it doesn't look exactly like the rest of the body then it's kind of a wasted effort, also, if everything is not removed and prepped properly and it starts to bubble and peel, again, a wasted effort to me... to do this right will require OVER $400 in materials alone before you even touch the first screw... 2k is not too much at all
if you don't spend the money to do it right the first time it will only cost even MORE to fix it the right way the second time, or the other alternative would be just wind up living with ratty and tacky... if your dealing with a really nice car I'd say either do it right or don't do it at all... why spend half the money to make it look worse than it did to begin with?

the second gen is slightly different in that the front bumper lower is a separate piece so the whole front bumper doesn't need to be painted, only the separate lower cover... everything else is around the same... for a second gen for ~ the same $$ you could get the whole aero kit which probably makes more sense
