Packing and Shipping those Heavy Rims/Tires

One thing, it works fine with these wheels as they have lips, but a wheel without a lip could get some damage or scuffs on the face from having just cardboard rub against it if it gets handled rough.
in that sense, I got lucky since mine came from NY n had cardboard covering the face, no scratches....

True, maybe some bubble wrap or a layer of stretch wrap before the cardboard may be a good idea for lipless rims.

Did my own little version today to ship my spare. Didn't think about doing the wrap around the outside, that would have been better.

I cut out two pieces of cardboard, two pieces of bubble wrap, and taped the bubble wrap to the cardboard. I forgot to get final pics, but I ended up just wrapping pieces of tape from one piece of cardboard, across the tread, and to the other piece of cardboard. Will see how it did in a few days.

Thought I'd add my HOW-TO here as well instead of starting a new thread. These are GTR rims with tires (no lip) shipped from Seattle,WA to Boston, MA (yup, across the whole US)

First I cut out 8 circles from 1/4" MDF board (hard, smooth press board). Radius of about 1" overlapping all the way around the rim.

Went to walmart and got some cotton fabric (don't mind the bunnies, couldn't pass up a killer deal on some post Easter print). Clean the face of the wheels so nothing gets caught between the fabric and finish. Cover the face of the wheel with fabric overlapping onto the tire.

Put the round 1/4" MDF piece on the fabric.

Tape it down in a star pattern (don't worry about taping it to bare tire, the tape will come off.)

Cover the back side of the wheel with MDF as well (no need for bunny fabric here as the MDF sits on the tire and no protection from scratches is needed.

Shrink wrap that sucker. Then tape in a star pattern again as well as along the thread of the tire

More shrink wrap and some stronger duct tape.

Done!

According to deeto (buyer) these came to him in great condition. It took me about 2 hrs to pack all four by myself. Well worth it though rather then dealing with shipping damage. This is a pretty solid shipping method but I'd recommend shipping insurance anyway.

Deeto should be adding some unpacking pics later on

Shipped as is, just put the labels right on the wheels. No need for box really

I can attest to the terrific results of this packing method. Nick did an outstanding job. The wheels/tires arrived in perfect condition. All wheels should be shipped this way, no boxes necessary!

The wheels as I received them

The extent of the damage to the wrapping from shipment. The extra plastic wrap Nick added definitely made a difference

Unwrapping was a breeze, simply slide scissors through the plastic around the MDF
