Osram CBI 5000K D2S HID Bulbs (The next big thing?)

mercedes s, cl, e class use these, especially when your paying 120k+ car im sure there good

Do I need to buy a ballast for these to work in my fx35 or can i just directly swap them out with my stock lightbulbs? They do both low beam and high beam?

Sorry, I don't know anything about lights.

5 minute swap. You don't need anything else -- you take out bulb and put these in.

D2S bulbs are both low and high beam.

- btw, don't get me wrong. Bulbs supplied as OEM are the best quality such as Philips and Osram. I've had ebay bulbs come from China for $10 shipped for 2 D2S bulbs that were nice, but lasted 6-12 months. Not bad for $10 shipped.

Morimotos, I think I paid $40/shipped a few years ago.

Philips are around $100/shipped.

The thing with Philips/Osram, I've dropped them (in a case), touched them, had dirt on them, you name it -- since 2003 and now it's been 8 years. I keep them as my back-up in my car if any bulbs fail and use them while I wait for the replacement.

Any bulb will degrade in lumens over time and though they are more resistant to color shift (philip/osram), they still do.

4300K Morimotos are 3100 lumens and 5000K are probably around 3000. Less than 3200 lumens of Osram.

Philips 85122+ (vs oem Philips 85122) are 3200 lumens (vs oem 2900 lumens), but are 4300K in color.

FX projectors as you said have great cut-offs already, and mine is tweaked with the reflector shield by none other than MARUS (which he actually ended up spending hours on to perfect) and the clear lens upgrade -- I have a nice colorful cutoff.

I just don't think that extra lumens, cutoff and color is worth the extra $150.

Just arguing for argument's sake - as I've looked into D2S bulbs for a while in the past. If the new morimotos bulbs are an improvement to the last ones, I'm for sure getting those as a replacement. But I think I've had mine for over 3 years so far, no flicker, no failures.

I should probably just read that 100+ page post to see what HID fanatics have to say...

But most of those guys I think like TSX projectors the best.

Yeah all the newer model Mercedes use these I believe. I also think the new BMW 5 series uses these bulbs too, I'm not sure though.

Can't wait to install these in the morning! Going to let 180customs install it for me because last time I changed the bulbs myself the AFS off error light started flashing on the dash.

What?! Pay to install bulbs lol.. J/k Aaron, whatever gets her done man.

LOL i have to! :)

For some reason the socket that attaches to the back of the bulb is very sensitive. It needs to face a certain direction when it's screwed on the bulb otherwise it keeps the projector from making a complete turn when you turn the steering wheel. I'd rather pay $20 and play it safe and save myself the headache haha.

Well installed the Osram CBI bulbs on Saturday and have had them on for 10 hours already. In order to reach their maximum brightness and color then need around 20-25 hours of burn in time. Here is a little video I made last night of how they look and my thoughts:

My first impressions:

1. When you first turn them on during the first few hours the color of the bulb is white with a little bit of yellow in it. But the longer these got time to burn in the more milky pure white they got. The yellow completely disappeared and their nothing but just chalky white now!! Their color will just continue to get more and more deep white as the burn in time increases. Also the light output will get brighter and brighter as burn in time increases.

2. Cutoff line is more precise than stock thanks to the better design of the metal plates that hold the bulb up at the base of it.

3. Beam pattern is noticeably wider than before!! This part really amazed me! I noticed it when driving on a dark highway with no street lights that the beam of light stretched out to the sides of the road more thanks to the longer cutoff and beam pattern. Amazing!!

4. The bulb is made of a really good quality. One thing I noticed about the Morimoto bulbs and Phillips bulbs is that no matter what you do they never fit flush and secure in the bulb socket on the back of the projector. These Osram CBI bulbs fit nice and tight which also explains the better precision of light being focused on the road.

5. Overall just a better high quality bulb with good build quality, more light than stock, and no cheap blue or yellow tinge to it. Just nothing but pure white. I was amazed at how much light output I was loosing after using the Morimoto 6K bulbs compared to my Osram CBI bulbs. These also look awesome in the day time! Osram is an OEM supplier so you can count on these bulbs to last years and years to come.

Only con of these bulbs are the $195 price tag. But hey I can definately see you get what you pay for! I will post up some more videos and pictures in another 10-15 hours of burn in.

I have these bulbs in my motorcycle and my truck, I have never had one burn out and am very pleased with them! They are definitely brighter than stock IMO.

awesome writeup....

did you have your brights on? If not, I can't imagine what it would be like then!!! Make sure to flick between the two when driving so we can get an idea....and then with fogs on/off....I don't have HID fogs like you do, so I'm curious the difference.

This might had finally convinced me to get aftermarket bulbs. I'm always peculiar about not going with aftermarket because they tend to be of cheaper build than aftermarket and I've never liked the blue tint, so this looks perfect for me....just another thing in the very long wish list I guess.

After being a long time lurker around here I decided to join and make a purchase on Osram CBI 5000K D2S bulbs for my 2009 Infiniti FX35. I received them this week and installed them today. First off I must say I love them, but I ran into some problems with these bulbs. The cutoff line is perfect on both the passenger and driver side. But on the passenger side there is a whole bunch of hot spots everywhere and the light is scattered. It makes the passenger side look dim compared to the driverside because the light is scattered and not focused. The cutoff line at the top is perfect, but the horizon of light below it looks horrible.

Before I installed the CBI's bulbs I had Morimoto bulbs and the light output was never scrattered and never had hot spots like this. So I can rule out that it's not related to the projector housing or ballast. Do you think I got a defective bulb?

i saw this post you made ....did you get the problem fixed ....what was the problem.?

do you have pictures and/or video? This would be a good comparison for Aaron to do with you to know for sure.

The bulb was installed improperly lol. I ended up taking out the passenger side bulb myself and installing it again after people recommending that and it fixed the problem.

I installed the Osram 66240CBI bulbs this week. I was very pleasantly surprised. There is a noticeable increase in light output, it's definitely a "whiter" light, and there is ALOT more side light (shoulder of the roadway). I expected to be underwhelmed but I am very happy with the results. Interested to see if I notice a difference after they get some more burn time.

Not a cheap bulb, but it's better than smacking a deer at night (which is pretty common in NJ, unfortunately).

This is exactly how I felt too. Besides more light than stock the beam pattern is noticeably wider. And no cheap rice blue light.

A lot of people think you can't get any brighter than stock since 4300K is as bright as it gets with lumens, but these Osram CBI bulbs break the ice.
