2009 FX50S
Hi,
i would like to change my stock battery for an Optima. The Optima web site is recommending for an 2009 FX50 the
OPTIMA® Batteries 8020-164 35 REDTOP , $199, shipped. Seems like a reasonable price.

My question for the battery giants is, is this the best Optima battery option? Are Yellow tops better? I really just want something that will drop in without any mods.

Is this replacement easily done ? Does the cowling need to come off to gain access? Looked around I do not see a DIY on this. Maybe it is simple? Here hoping.

thanks !

Get the yellow top if you get an Optima, they are made for deep cycling. The red top is not rated very high for cold cranking amps (720) anyway. I can tell you from experience that they do not last very long either. I opted for an Interstate Mega-Tron Plus, rated at 800 CCA and at $130. I know Interstate has an AGM battery now like the Optimas, wouldn't be a bad idea to check that out either. Definitely roll with the yellow top though if you go with Optima.

As far as replacement, it is not bad. The cowling does need to be removed but that's minor. Just make sure you do this with a nice step stool or something though, your back will thank you later for it.

Good luck!

Randy

Yellow top is the way to go in my opinion and you do need to remove the cowl in order to swap the battery. The little hook to hold down the battery is a PIA to get it hooked up once you take it apart, so pay special attention where about the hole is at the bottom of the battery tray.
