Oil Dip Stick

How accurate is the engine oil dip stick? It seem like I can' never tell how to read the one on the FX. I can't seem to tell if I'm putting in way too much oil. I typically fill using 5qts every time I drain the oil.

Any thoughts?

I also can never read the dipstick, I just make sure to fully drain the oil and swap the filter, after refill with 5 quarts exact.

The dipstick seems to rub against the sides making in unreadable.

I don't have a problem reading the dipstick- getting it in/out is another story. Location of the dipstick on the side of the engine is a nuisance - same as in the 350Z. I beleive the 09+ FX and Z now have the dipstick in front.

If you check the oil first thing in the morning after sitting all nite you will get a good reading.

I have the same issue. I can never read the dip stick correctly. Always rubs against the sides when pulling it out. No matter what angle you pull it out. I buy the 5qt jug from wallmart. (Pennzoil platinum) 20 bucks not bad and its synthetic. When i drain the oil i refill the jug with my old oil and i compare the level to see if i burned up any oil.

right- it is tricky to angle it just right when you pull it out to make sure it doesn't rub and distort the reading. Good news is a slight overfill/underfill won't hurt the engine.

The emphasis on SLIGHT.

The 45's were known to react badly to an overfill when some dealers were putting in 7 quarts instead of the 6.5 required. http://www.infinitifx.org/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=20583&p=229278&hilit=engine+oil+overfill#p229278

All the more reason to DIY if you have the space and means. But yes...the dipstick is kind of hard to read until you get used to it and know which oil marks to ignore.

Just looked at the TSB -Interesting that 1/2 qt overfill would cause that problem, I'll bet it happens alot. From what I've seen whether its jiffylube or the dealer your odds of getting the exact oil level are slim.
