I've recently had some peeling on my stock 2004 knob. I was wondering if anyone had updated to the 2nd gen knob? It looks like this..

I want to know the same thing. I was at the dealer today getting parts. The guy said he didn't see why not. He was willing to let me test fit it outside. But they didn't end up having one in stock. thinking of trying another dealer. would b a sweet upgrade. I don't much like our shift knob.

Any input is appreciated!

That little clip pulls right out. Dose anyone have a pic of the clip from the gen2 fx? I have been trying to find a clear image of the clip. But you cant tell good enough from diagrams.

I am going to go a bit further today and try knobs out of friends oem cars, I have an acura tl and tsx to test. and a bmw. I expect the bmw knob not to fit at all. But we will try. I will post my findings.

Further more I took apart the whole console yesterday, and took off the silver strip from the shift knob. (you have to cut it out very slowly) if all else fails I'm to paint the silver strip black. (I am doing the 3m di-noc wrap to my console and other interior accessories. Soon I will be able to post pics.
Im taking pics along the way, so if anybody needs ill have them.

fail fail fail.

I see how you could chop up our shifter and make one of the other various knobs fit, but i don't think its a great idea.

I am not giving up! Im going to find a nice knob that works, with minimal or no modification.

For now I took apart the stock knob. and gonna paint the silver portions black (my interior is black, and im doin the 3m di-noc carbon-fiber wrap to my console)

Any aftermarket knob that uses set screws will work. It may take some tweaking, but it will work. I tried out a MOMO and it worked. M45/56/35/37 knobs work as well. BMW knob definitely won't since they use friction to stay in place (I have a 335). Most Honda/Acura knobs don't have the push button which we need. Same with most Lexus knobs. So you're probably going to have to stay in the Nissan/Infiniti family or go aftermarket.

Just a fyi I tried my shift knob off my 2nd gen Fx inside my 1st gen G which uses the same shifter assembly as the 1st gen Fx and it does not work at all. You need to make some serious modifications on the shaft to get the button to work.

I actually think it's longer in length, but it's all about how it shifts.

I actually have one that I accidentally bought from ebay a while ago. All I can say for sure is that the two knobs certainly function the same way (lever actuated vertical button atop the shift lever shaft).

Without having tried it, I can only see three reasons it wouldn't work.
1) The 1st gen shaft is too large in dia.
2) The different lower clip is not adaptable.
3) The button isn't depressed far enough by the 2nd gen knob. (I experienced this with the Momo knob on my second fx. The button has to be pressed in FULLY in order to unlock the shift lever. If the 2nd gen linkage is a different length - no go.)

Yup this is all of what I experienced. Someone on G35 forums did this mod but they had to hack up the shaft to get it to work. Not worth it imo. I wanted to do though.

Tim, I was referring to your post regarding the shaft being too wide. My dirty mind clicked in, but looks like it wasn't dirty enough :-(
