Obd2 software/USB cable?

I've seen posts on other sites about downloading obd2 software adding a USB to obd2 cable and using a lot for reading codes etc. has anyone here tried that? I hate taking my car to autozone etc. just for this. I know you can get cheap code readers but I hear the laptop software may be more in depth etc
 
Consult II is the popular one for the pro units.
There is also a mobile device app called Torque. It requires a bluetooth OBD2 dongle that costs less than $20. I haven't used mine yet, but I've only heard good things.
 
I have torque on the phone. Cypher on the laptop. I also have older elmscan USB cable as well.

All three do the functions u need.
 
Torque may not be apple friendly. I found rev and dashcontrol on the App Store. Now I need to decide on the wifi/Bluetooth connector.

How do you like Torque? It looks a lot like Rev
 
When I got Torque sometime in the spring, I wanted to investigate a check engine light on another vehicle. The light went away, I never even tried plugging it in there, and it's no longer hardly any concern. I did plug it into the FX once to check it out. I played with it for about one minute checking aout only some of the many menus. No check engine lights and i haven't gotten around to play with it since.
Every review I've read has been very good. App, dongle, and shipping: I'm in $17 and very happy.

I got the blue and orange stickered kiwi dongle off eBay. This one seemed to be the popular choice them and I think they're all pretty much the same anyways. It was ~$17 including shipping from China. The free version app gets most people by fine. The paid version was $5.
