NOTICE: Hacking Device for Keyless entry cars

Thats crazy. It is possible that there is in fact signal amplifying devices out there wich raises curiousity to if it has ever
been done to an fx. Scary but i woudnt put my keys in the freezer lol.

Wow, I think this just happened to me last week. I was in Miami for the day and hung out with an old friend who moved down there. We went to the Wynnwood Art district which is where they hold Art Basel. He parked and my backpack was in his trunk. I didn't want to take it out since it wasn't needed. His computer bag was in there as well. About 5 hours later, we leave and head over to his condo. When we get there, he pops the trunk and my bag and his bag are gone. No break in, no signs of forced entry. He swore he locked it and I believe him. Maybe this is what happened. It was his company car so it's a 2012 Charger and it is equipped with the type of keyless entry that unlocks as soon as you get near the car.

I live in the LosFeliz community in Los Angeles where the author of the article also lives, wow this is crazy!!

I posted this in the story but an easy way to defeat this sort of thing is to force a button on the remote to be pressed, or insertion of the key (ie if the battery is dead) before unlocking the doors. Should have been set that way by default by the auto manufacturers.

The reason this hack works even though there is a long encryption code/key pair between the remote and the car is that the remote will send the code when the car requests it. If you force the user to press the remote button (or give them the option to have it work this way) this will completely defeat the hack.

True, and that's how keyless used to be. On my '07 BMW, I have to press the remote key to unlock the door. But on newer ones, it's all comfort access which is the proximity sensor. I suppose on my FX, the button is in the door, so if someone did this, they could just press the button on the door and it would open. I remember in '06 when I bought my IS350, it auto unlocked when I got close to the door and I thought it was magical and so awesome. Guess there is a downside to it.

Wow, that really sucks. If you google "Fob Guard" there's a website selling faraday cages for keyless key fobs because of this problem. Small, light, fits in your jeans or wherever.
