Noob looking for an FX

My wife and I are getting ready to start a family and need to get rid of her convertible VW Beetle and get an SUV. Luckily, my wife has great taste and only likes 3 different SUVs. The BMW X5, The Mercedes G Class and of course the FX35. The G Class is $100,000+ so it's obviously out of the questions. I like the X5, but it's very expensive and seems to have a spotty reliability record. So the FX35 seems to be the logical choice.

I've been a huge Nissan fan since my 1992 240sx that I drove in high school. I later purchased a Maxima and then a Titan. I've never owned an Infinity, but I'm sure they are even more amazing than their Nissan brethren.

We test drove a 2006 FX35 with 46,000 miles yesterday and I fell in love with it. Now, I'm just trying to do my homework before I plop down a bunch of cash for one of these bad boys.

Can you all tell me of any years, options, trim levels, etc. that I need to steer clear of? Consumer reports and Edmunds haven't been much help because they love this vehicle so much...which is a great thing. I would just like to get some inside knowledge from some smart folks like yourselves.

Thanks in advance for your help, and I'll post pics as soon as I figure out which one I want the most (and have 10 posts on this forum).

How old of a FX are you willing to get? Are you planning on getting a first or second generation FX? are you looking for a rear wheel drive or an all wheel drive FX ? That might help when people can tell u the best info.

I have a 2008 AWD FX35 and I have no complains about the car other then the back seats seems to squeak alot when I'm driving over a bumpy road. Other then that no complains. I love how it handles and love the car. I know that I never regret ever purchasing this car and spending 40k when I got it off the lot brand new.

If you are a very picky person regarding to interior squeaking.. then pick something else. Infinit's interior is not built as good quality as european cars. Also the leather on the seat is actually vinyl, it's very thin.

I'm looking at 2006 or newer, AWD would be nice but not a deal breaker, and I want something with some factory warranty left on it. On that note, is there anyone out there who has purchased an extended warranty from Infinity? We'll have this car for at least 5 years, so it's something I'm very interested in.

Since this will be my wife's car, I'm not too worried about interior squeaking. I notice the smallest creaks and squeaks, but my she never hears anything.

BTW, what's this app? I'd love to be able to read and reply to threads on my iPhone. When I had my Titan, my wife would make fun of me because I always talked about my Titan forum. It's amazing how much I learned from those guys!

Thanks for the info so far.

06 represented the first year of interior remodeling. try to find an 07 or later model if that fits your budget better. Tech pacakge is the best. You say it's for a family, then i suggest getting an AWD for added safety. cargo space is a bit compromised so you might want to think of that. as far as squeaking, mines 2005 model and have not had any squeaking problems yet. Infiniti warranty is a bit expensive but with zero deductible and full coverage, it's something you might not want to ignore.
Good Luck on your search and WELCOME to IS. Feel free to ask any question as you like.

Thanks for the info, Bleedingsujit! I haven't seen an '07 in person yet, but I'll get working on it.

Ocal21, I got the app working and actually posted with it. I just need to set up my signature. That's a very slick app.

Stay 06 and newer. I have an 04 and I don't have really any squeaking. Very minor stuff that happens to almost all cars 6yrs old.

- With a family, the TECH package is a must have. Just for the Ikey alone is worth it(keyless entry and ignition), navigation is just a plus that comes with the package.

- AWD if you are in a place that rains/snows. SoCal AWD is kind of wasted, but there is a handling benefit for mountain roads though. Remember though, it is not a 4wd unit...used more for traction than anything. NOT for offroad use at all! please disregard "desert" youtube video....

- FX35 vs FX45 - 45's come with AWD standard, not an option. 35's have slightly better gas mileage and are very easy to mod the engine ( without wifey knowing...:wink (2):)

- STAY CLEAR OF - nothing.....it's a great car and welcome to I.Scene

Welcome to IS. Where in atlanta are you looking for the FX. Infiniti of Gwinnett has a couple of 07 and 08 models on their lot. They give pretty good deals on the extended warranties as well.

Thanks, ATL. I live on the Forsyth/Gwinnet line, so I'll swing by there tomorrow. Are there many FX meets in the Atlanta area?

I'm a complete newbie as well - and my wife just decided she wanted a FX35 out of the blue one day (saw it for sale on C.L.). I did a little homework - and was in the same boat as you but 3 months back. Couldn't find very many bad things on all the auto-report/websites. So we went with it......now I wish I was driving one daily rather than our 4x4's (4runner & Tacoma)....LOL...
You will fall in love with this car. We bought ours with 75K on it - so it's older (03) I just finished replacing the struts (easy DIY) and I'm just doing routine maintenance now (diff fluids/tcase/coolant ect.). I hope it's a car that will last a while - because we fell in love with it. After the new struts/bushings - it feels brand new. Tight, crisp, powerful, elegant, but still plush, soft, and comfy. It's really weird - a ride I've never experienced before.
I have 0 squeaky interior issues - I never heard anything about those.
Good luck on the search - (make sure to get the exact color your wife wants - that is the reason my wife goes through so many autos - I choose the last 3, now it was her turn)

There aren't any meets in the Atlanta area. I've seen some members join here but not enough to have a meet.

Good luck with finding an FX!

Good point on the color choice, Boost. My wife wants a black one with brick interior. They seem to be hard to find, but I've come across two in the Atlata area. One was actually an FX45 that was pretty sweet.

White Hair, I'm pretty well sold on the extended warranty. For the price, it seems hard to beat.

I'm pretty sure we'll be pulling the trigger on this thing in the next week or so. I know what the wife wants, now it's just time to find a deal.

Thanks again for all the insights!

So I have a 2007 FX35 in my driveway right now. I haven't purchased it yet, but it's pretty certain that we're going to get it!

Black with Brick, Sport, Tech. It's so freaking fun to drive!

we purchased the extended warranty when we bought our 06 FX. it had 53k miles on the clock and had 7k left so we ended up getting the warranty. good investment imo.
