So I have been riding on the Nismo Exhaust for a few weeks and I wonder how to make it a little more quiet during acceleration. I like the idle (very quiet) , but want a little less during WOT.

Do you think replacing the Nismo Y pipe to stock Y will do anything? also I don't think I will lose any performance (noticable) or am I wrong?

Y pipe will not noticablly decrease your sound.

Your muffler has the biggest job of getting the sound you want. Without replacing your Nismo muffler (rear section), the options I see that you have are:
1) Cut out the nismo resonator (it's on the mid pipe) and replace with a more sound absorbing one (nismo resonator is probably a high flow performance one)
2) Leave the nismo resonator and add another resonator on the mid-pipe.

Now the nismo exhaust was tuned for the entire system to work together, so I would hesitate messing with it. Certain parts of the resonator, muffler, y pipe all work together to either diffuse high/low frequencies or increase them, all for the nismo sound people look for.

You can try out a HKS exhaust, mine is silent at idle, and a very low rumble at acceleration. Definitely not quiet, but a very deep European/American mixture of sound.
 
Yea, Chedman makes some good suggestions. And Will is right about the different sizing of the pipes. May want to add another resonator for possibly the easiest and quickest fix.
 
well, just may leave it the way it is, I don't want to chop it up. Since this is a really good item that i can resell later on.

Its not that loud. I actually like it.
I would like to hear a HKS with a similar setup in person though. possibly trading someone wants a 3"inch Nismo.

So swapping the Y-pipe wont make any difference? even incabin?

You like the idea of swapping the y-pipe don't you =)

No, Y pipe is where the exhaust pulses meet. Yes, you might get a little bit of a difference in one y-pipe vs the other, but the major pieces of "adjusting" sound is the resonator and muffler.

Resonator and mufflers can have different designs with possible chambers, sound deading materials, etc... Y pipe typically don't have any of these, just two tubes coming together. The advantage of a better man y pipe is the flow is increase and less resistance.

I mean you can always try it, the exhaust pulses will come together a little differently in a different y-pipe and possibly collide to create different frequencies, better or worse, is for you to tell.

How about taking out the y-pipe and add a custom bent y-pipe with resonators on both? You should have enough room if you have a RWD, but if not, the mid-pipe/new resonator is your best bet.
 
I love the Nismo sound. You're right though, it is loud. Quiet in the car, but under bridges & tunnels, You can really hear that it's yelling. I've heard the HKS on Alex's ride, & it was pretty loud too. All he had was the rear can. There's not a whole lot of gains from the exhaust anyway. I say if it really bothers you, just slap the stock back on.
 
have you compared your nismo's sound to others'?

The reason I ask is mine was loud, it got louder, and then it sounded like it quiet down just a bit, or maybe I got used to it. If you guys remember, I had that strange noise coming out and then I re aligned the pipes and it went away.

I think you should compair it.

Maybe next time I see you guys at a meet. I know a few have Nismo (45 may sound different)

I have the Nismo exhaust and Y-Pipe on my AWD FX35. My exhaust shop put the Y-Pipe with some cutting and adding :). Search on youtube; "FX35 Nismo exhaust"
 
As I have found this out the hard way. unless you do a before and after on the same dyno on the same day with same conditions, you'll never get the true numbers.

My FX dyno'd on at 246 on a DaynaPack with a MD 1/2" spacer, JWT Pop Charger, and Nismo Cat back. I was told the DanaPack's numbers are inflated. I upgraded to a Stillen Stage 4 with a bunch of other mods and got to 329.2whp on TechnoSquare's Dyno.

Went back to the same DaynaPack and got 284whp on a cooler day.:confused:
