So.. Picked up a Nexus 7 for my car. Planned to use it strictly for music and Google Maps. Was looking for good mounts that aren't too bulky and fit the style of the interior (not just grey plastic).. Nothing good out there.
Then, I came across this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2113259
This guy uses this ROM: http://mehrvarz.github.io/usb-host-mode-power-management-nexus7/
Thought to myself, since I dont have a backup cam, might as well integrate this completely with my car.
After deciding on committing to this project, I went to my car and started placing the tablet in different positions to find the best fitment. I found 3 options:
Option 1:
Found that if i could mount it somehow right on top of the screen, it would have the most perfect fitment. It would have an 'integrated' look and feel without actually being part of the dash. As for access to the car screen, have a bracket/hinge for the tablet that would raise it up like a flap. Since I won't disassemble the tablet like the guy on XDA, the wires and connectors would go into the vent and out behind the stereo. They would not stick out much either - would be slick. Downside: from my point of view when I drive, the tablet reflects the sunroof.
Option 2:
I could have a more driver oriented setup. The tablet would rest in the cavity of the screen facing the driver. I don't really know how I feel about this since it isn't as slick, doesn't have the "integrated" feel, would product scratches on the car screen over time, the climate portion of the screen would be somewhat hidden. The two plus sides i see to this are that it would take less custom hardware to mount, and it could be flapped down in case of a cop (I am not really sure how they feel about things like this).
Option 3:
Screw all these ideas, stop being stubborn, and just buy a shitty-looking flexi mount.
Thoughts, or pointers, maybe someone has done this just hasn't documented it. Would love to hear and see....
