newb questions.....

Hello all. very cool site btw. I looked at several and this is the only one I actually signed up for.

I just bought an 05 FX 35 and love it. I've only had it for about two weeks. I was checking out the photo gallery on this site and realized, you guys have some sexy lookin machines on here.

I did some searching around on here before deciding to post. I didn't want to ask questions that have probably been asked a million times on here, but I couldn't seem to find, specific answers, to some of my questions, so here it goes.

Without me messing with the suspension, brakes, ect, what is the widest I can go on rear tires, if I were to put 20" wheels on? I know there's no one cut and dry answer to my question, based on what I've been reading on here. Apparently there's more to this, than I originally thought there would be. I was getting frustrated and overwhelmed with infomation. I saw at least one guy on here has 315's on the rear of an FX45. What mods he had to make to do that, I have no idea. It looks sweeeeeeeeet and I love his rims. I forget what the posters name is... going to look right now..... brb (as if you guys noticed me gone, in realtime) ;) ............ ok just hunted it down... Dr.2K those wheels are great looking. Not sure I'd go with that size rim but I love the look of the wheel. I'm not even sure if an FX45 is diff. than a 35 as far as wheel size acomidation? I was thinking of a 20" wheel with a not so low prifile tire. I would love to go with 315's in the rear but something tells me there's more to that than just going out and buying wheels and tires? Seems that widtch would have to stick out, without some other modification, but I'm not sure, hence me asking these most likely, very reduntant questions on here.

I would love some assistance in giving my FX the look I desire. Keep in mind, as much as I love some of these FX's on here, I'm not in position to just start dumping endless money into mine. Wheels and tires i can do, but not much beyond that, at this time.

ps. I did read where one poster was talking about the bennifite of running all four tires the same size, so he could rotate them. I'd actually be willing to sacrafise that, for the wide aggresive look from the rear.

again, fantastic community you peeps have here.
Thanks, Brian

welcome to :iS:

well, for one thing... Dr.2K's wheels are 22x10... which is why he was able to go up to 315s

what do you think of this setup?

ummm, do you mean the setup on that one in the photo or the link beside "my gallery" at the bottom. both look sweet. I like that color. I don't think I ever saw an FX that color. On Dr.2k's wheels....I realize his are wider rims and I'd be willing to do that, provided there's no other expensive mods that need to be made. I'd go with a 20x10 if that's what it took and I could do that. But I need to know if 315's have other drawbacks I'm not realizing.

Thanks,

Thank you... I will certainly let everyone know and post pics. But i need some FX wheel and tire size guru's to step up here.

Thanks

Hey there and welcome to the community!

First off, do you plan on lowering your ride? If so, then your limitation on wheel/tire combo will be dictated by the wheel offset, width and tire sidewall bulge. Like trainerKen stated my wheels are 22x10 with +35 offset all around wrapped on 305 pirelli's and not 315. With this setup and being lowered with eibach springs I had to shave a significant portion of my rear and front wheel well trim. However, I think if I decided to go with 285's and perhaps even 295's tires I would not have any rubbing issues because I would have lesser sidewall bulge amd shorter width tires too.

If however, you will not be lowering your FX then theoretically you can go with any width, offset wheel and tire combination you wish and will not have to worry about any rubbing issues with normal driving.

How cool, the man himself replied. Love the look of your FX. I'm somewhat biased, seeing that yours is the same color as mine, but yours just looks great, all over, as do so many others on here.

Thanks for relying and sorry for the 315/305 mix up. So you say I could go with 305's provided I don't lower it.... that's good news to me. What do you mean by the offset? I'm sorry, I'm new to modifying a vehicle, but can see how it could become very addicting. The offset you mention has to do with what, ultimately?

What's the widest I can go in the front. I'm sure there's a clear cut width for the front, due to turning radius and rubbing at full turn.

Dr.2K are you saying as far as you know, I could go with a 20X10" wheel in the rear and not have a problem with rubbing, provided I have a lower profile tire?

I need to look around at some tire looks and size combo's. To bad you guys didn't all list all your tire and rim size specs, in the photo gallery of your FX's on here. ;)

Dr.2K where should I price or look for wheels similar to yours. (I won't get exact wheels) I like that machined look (i think it's called) rather than chrome or the really shinney look. you're outter rim seems to be shinnier than the spokes/inner wheel. I like that look.

Thanks, any help will be greatly appreciated. I def. want 305's in rear and will do whatever I need to, for that to happen.

again thanks for responding, I'll also keep looking and researching myself.

So if I want this setting I could go 22x10 38 offset with 285-295 tires without having to shave anything?

Thanks a bunch Dr.2K. I'll let you all know what I decide and post pix of course. It'll be a little while. Even if I had the wheels now, the anti skid crap they put on the streets in PA, wouldn't allow me to put them on yet anyway.

Guess I could post pix of the wheels sitting in my garage. ha.

Isn't there a thread on here where everyone posted their wheel specs and if they had to change anything for fitment?

ok, what about the front? What is the widest, without any other mods being done? I'm sure someone knows this off the top of their head. 285's I would think? as long as there's no rubbing when at full turn in both directions????????

Im running 285 all around and im lowered on eibachs.......but I dont recall the offset of my wheels

OK, I'm back and have now got a fairly decent grasp on tire/wheel sizing and offsets (the basics at least). I've still been having fits with people giving me diff. answers, on the same questions. People telling me i can in no way put a 20x10 rim w/ 295-45 tire, all the way around. (I've decided against staggering) Some of these wheel "experts" at these places, don't seem to take into consideration the offset, while others have. I've had people tell me I can do it for sure, but the ones telling me I can't, have me really worried about just ordering a set and having them shipped to my house, then I'm stuck with wheels that don't work, or could damage my FX.

Some Quick questions.

1. To Dr. 2K.... How close is your tire on the inside to your shock tower/coil spring?? and did you modify something in there that's allowing you to have 305's? I know you lowered yours, but I don't know if that changes the position of the spring/shock tower. Reason I ask is i got under mine and looked and even the stock 265/60/18's seem rather close. Doesn't look like there's much more room to give. (or am I not considering an important point??????)

2. What is the stock offset on the FX with the 18" wheels??

3. If anyone out there has 295's on a 20x10 rim, please please please tell me what the real story is with this, and if I can do it.

People are telling me there's no way I can go wider than a 20x10/285-50. I want 295/45's on there, all the way around.

Please help, before I go out of my mind.

thanks
