Newb looking to purchase first gen FX35

Hello infinitiscene,

I am looking to purchase a first gen fx35 [03-08]. I'm not new to the car scene but I'm new to these SUVs.

I'm well aware of the g35/350z oil consumption issues and I've read about some of the same problems on the first gen fx35 due to the same VQ35E engines. Granted it doesn't seem to be as common but I've still seen some threads here and there. I want to be sure I do not get one with these issues.

Is it true that the first gen fx35s went through an engine revision in 07? If so I will only look for an 07 to 08 model.

Are there any fool proof ways to tell if an fx has these issues aside from previous maintenance records? A compression test on a cold motor perhaps? Check for smoking on a cold start?

I'm not too concerned with any other issues as turning a wrench isn't a big deal, I just don't want to deal with any drive train problems.

Thanks for any advice :]

Hello Eric. As far as I know, the Engine remains the same. I haven't seen much oil consumption issue. It's notorious in the G&Z Scene but not that popular in the FX community.

There is no fool proof way to tell AFAIK. They don't burn that much for the smoke to be noticeable. Compression test won't really tell anything either.

I say either get the 2nd Gen or pull the trigger.

yup. of course the latest year first gen is ideal (08) but if you do pull a trigger on the earlier years then just get something 04+. IMO not to be bias but coming from a 3.5L I went with the FX45 because gas consumption difference was so minimal yet the 45 comes standard with lots of goodies and more HP..way more.. sounds different and more rare.

about the oil consumption, so long as you do regular oil changes at shorter intervals you should be okay. many members on here went with Rotella T6 Oil and its been a saving grace. I personally used it on a couple runs and have noticed little to none oil consumption.

having a 3.5 and a 4.5 i can tell you every car will smoke a little..the humidity and area also plays a role.. just make sure its not rock solid blue smoke or like seafoam style. as the car warms up the smoke gradually fades.

all in all, get one from a dealer with warranty if possible, and if not just get it from a dealer at least they are accountable for selling you a lemon or can be.

if you are getting it private then do a full inspection and all your questions will be answered. peace of mind is worth the price. I almost bought an accord until i paid 150 for the inspection at honda and as a result now I drive a fx45. I got mine at 70k miles and had every main problem our fx has. sourced my own parts and brought it to my mechanic. 5+ years ownership and NOT once has it ever failed me or made me feel worried. I've driven it in blazing hot tempertures and it kills our Canadian winters no problem. Solid car. Always get compliments for a 12 year old car now thats rare.

best of luck

Don't hesitate on getting gone of these. You can't go wrong with either the 35 or 45...these are solid built cars and as long as you search and
get yourself one in decent condition...maintenance should be minimal. Just be sure to do your research and check the car out thoroughly as
others mentioned above. You won't be sorry....

Just fyi the 06-08 had slight exterior changes and also more upgrades inside. IMO I would get one from these years if you really want a 1st Gen.

Most like they have answered all you want to know about the prospect car you want. So more or less it really depends on how you would use it and how OC you are when it comes to maintenance.
