To all my fellow New Yorkers, have you guys heard about this new window tint law being passed?

De Blasio, O'Neill And Others Call On Cuomo To Sign Tinted Window Legislation

I do not agree with this, i get where they are coming from and for police safety but it should be at your own discretion to put them on. obviously they are illegal in this state anything less then 70% light that passes through are considered illegal but should not be regulated by a cars annual safety and emissions inspection.

Personally i love tinted windows on cars/trucks. i think it makes the vehicle look so much better and also the privacy for inside the cabin is always nice too.

Here is a picture of my old truck in which i still have. I have 5% tints all around which is very aggressive and too dark i must say. even though i love it, i can barely see anything at night.

I would love to hear everyone else's opinion on this topic!

This seems like the best way to enforce the law imo. I just took the tint off the Z so I could get it inspected.

I agree I love tint but some guys tend to tint too dark, as you say making it difficult to see out at night. On the other side of the coin if they are too dark, a person could be pointing a gun at you from inside the vehicle and you wouldn't even know it.
Our laws here in Ontario are no tint darker than 35% and no full tinting of the front windshield which I think is fine.

I doubt they'd want to shoot their own window out or put a whole in their door panel but to be fair they could be pointing one at you below the window line in a car with non tinted windows and you wouldn't know it either.

I'm on the fence with the tint laws, I love my tints and even have my windshield tinted just not as dark as the sides and rear, I feel as though when you're in you vehicle you should be able to have your privacy no matter what your up to. Of course the downside no-one out the outside knows what inside and it could be a huge bomb waiting to go off...

Tint laws are stupid... unmarked police cars use tints so is it ok for them and not us? Here in Ct you need 35 percent to be legal but I've always gotten 20 percent some of my friends and just people in general do 5 percent and even the windshield. Police out here have more important things to worry about than someones tints. They dont bother you for it.

You will get use to it eventually.

I got a couple of friends get their tint scratch by cop and ticketed at the same time.

There is always two sides of the story, if you live in my city where shooting seems to be rampant then i do understand that they want to enforce this.

Agreed, here in PA even marked police Cars and SUV's have tints on all but the Windshield. I remember having to fight a tint ticket in court And I asked the judge why it was okay for police cars to have tints and not our car, She said because they can. o_O

So what was the outcome, did you have to pay the ticket or not?

@ocal21 I would have had to pay, unfortunately for them I told them car was sold so they couldn't verify if the tint was removed or not. So the just just threw it out. I had my FX45 at the time which had tint on the front windows too but they don't car as much when you have an SUV. At least around here they don't.

This was the car at the time of the ticket.

Same thing happened to me. i been pulled over a few times for some stupid things not necessarily for my tints, but most of the time the cops would tell me, "hey, you know your windows are very dark and are illegal" i would simply reply yes i know, and they would just tell me whenever you see a cop just roll your front 2 windows down.

Then i finally got a ticket by a trooper who was waiting on a service ramp entrance to a parkway. he was pretty nice and let me slide away with a few things but told me he still needed to give a ticket for something :cautious: so he gave me a tint ticket... i asked him if there was anyway i can fight it and he told me honestly just pay the ticket because the only way you'll get out of paying is if you rip off the tints and show them prof that you had them taken off.

moral of the story is most of the cops who pointed out my tints to me just told me to roll them down when you see cops.

Once I was pulled over by a state trooper and since the officer had nothing on me he hassled me over my tints. I had a chrysler 300 at the time anyways he gave me a summons to go to the dmv to have them inspected. Before I went I pulled the tints off the 2 front windows then afterwards on the same day had them redone again. That was the only one time I was hassled over them but never again.

When I was living in NY, I had 20% tints on my g35 coupe that I would get pulled over frequently. Now living in PA, no longer have g35 coupe but have FX35 with 15% tints, I have yet to get pulled over (knock on wood). I do travel back and forth to NY/PA. Usually SUV's come tinted factory (rears) and probably would assume my fronts were factory as well so they never bothered to pull me over.

Police know that front windows do not come tinted from the factory lol, they just don't bother much when it comes to SUV's.
