I just replaced the rear tires (which were stock Potenza RE92A's), with Hankook Ventus AS RH07's. The pulling becomes most noticeable around 70 MPH. If i'm cruising on a strait level road with no crosswind and i let off the gas. The car will start to drift/pull to the right. If i get back on the gas to maintain speed the car starts to drift/pull back to the left. IIRC, when getting back on the gas im applying enough throttle to regain the 1-2 MPH i lost while letting the car coast.
Now when i say drift/pull. This action seemingly comes from the rear end of the car only. I dont feel any input through the steering wheel. The amount of pull at 70 is enough that if i dont correct the direction of the car, it would take about 2 seconds or less for me to start crossing the line into the next lane. My starting position would be the center of my lane. This can also be done starting at around 45 MPH in 3rd gear. 3rd gear is needed to create enough load either accelerating or decelerating. At least 50% throttle is required also. The departure angle is much less at this speed though. It would take a good 4+ seconds to reach the next lane.
I did not notice the behavior at all before the new tires where put on. I noticed with about 15 miles on the tires as that is when i first hit the highway. It has done it consistently since then in numerous road conditions. And is repeatable with every attempt.
So far i have had the alignment checked. Result. Back is within spec. Front, Toe: Left is -0.07 Right is +0.10 Everything else is within spec. So my toe is slightly off. But at those numbers the tires should be nearly perfectly strait in relation to each other. Slamming on the brakes at 70 MPH with no hands, the car tracks strait as could be. And tracks strait in every other situation and does not pull.
Tires pressure is spot on.
Tires are both RH07's and the correct size.(seen someone else have a very similar issue and this was one cause, alone with a separate case where the tire pressure was way off(80 psi))
I still have two stock tires on the car(front). The tread is just about gone. But they are fine for dry pavement. I swapped the front and rears. So now i have the stock tires on the rear. I did a short highway drive (70 MPH test) and my 45 MPH test on surface streets. The car no longer drift/pulls. I will verify the pulling is gone tomorrow when i do a longer drive on the highway.
Another thing i noticed about both tires. The New Hankooks. When in the rear they make the rear end lunge into hard turns. But this is a delayed action and it's a bit unpredictable. With the wrong person behind the wheel i could see a aggressive lane switch on the highway coming close to a accident. When the Hankooks are on the front, the initial turn-in is reduced. IE, i have to turn the wheel much more to get the car to change direction. But the previously mentioned behavior when they are on the rear does not carry over to the front. And with the stocks on the rear, the rear acts tight, follows everything you command and is predictable.
At first i was thinking i had some bad bushings or the alignment was off in the rear and/or the new tread/tread design was just grabbing the road better and bring out a existing issue. But now i'm leaning towards the idea that these new tires may just suck and i need to get something different.
Sorry for the long post. But i've asked around quiet a bit. And the tire shop/everyone i've asked is at a loss. My next step may be the dealer, but im avoiding that.
Any ideas or opinions as to whats going on?
