New FX50S owner here

Hi everyone, just discovered this forum. Bought my FX50S in Dec...after owning a '07 G35X, and previously a '93 Q45. Big time Infiniti fan. Bought it in Edmonton Alberta but will be moving back to Vancouver, my real home, soon.
Love this vehicle....ultimate muscle car! But why did they tune the engine to 390 HP? That close to 400, why stop at 390? I won't mod it too much but...yes you guessed it...would like to step up the power to 450ish. Any suggestions?

What's your favorite part of the ride? Mine is the tech package....I don't think I can ever get another ride again without them I've been soooo spoiled! lol
 
welcome to the forum. not very many options out there for the 50. 390 should be enough. 450 from n/a would be awesome. you will have to add a custom turbo kit which means you will be spending $$$ unless you can convince yourself of what you have now. GL
 
Possible that breather mods combined with a solid dyno tune (if available from UPREV or Unichip) could get you much closer.....Welcome to the forum!

My budget? Hadn't thought of that really....$500 -$1000 or so for another 40-50HP? I called a local performance shop that specializes in Infiniti and he said he could chip it and get me 10% more power, but reading through this forum I don't see much info regarding chips so now I wonder if the guy was bs'ing. Free flow exhaust would be another option.
The tech pkge is great....a lot of features. I like the sound system for sure....but really like the handling. This vehicle is on rails in tight turns. Incredible really for a small SUV.

Don't mean to be the one to break it to you, but $500-$1000 may yield you 8-10HP, keyword MAY - even then you'd have to get a few good deals on a couple key components.

Not likely, a "chip" really isn't anything by itself - all a chip can do is unlock the car for a custom tune (which is great once you have some mods on), or a change certain characteristics within the ECU (speed limiter, throttle response)

$1000 is a good start, but for 40-50HP - I think without going F/I (if that's even possible) - you'd be dropping somewhere closer to $10k (parts & labor)

But it all has to start somewhere right? :tup:
 
Oh well, I could dream. I won't be spending $10,000 on this yet. Maybe in a couple of years...as I plan on keeping this for a few years.

There are two simple ways you can get to your goals - Logan nailed it. Intake, exhaust and an ECU tune from a shop that already knows your motor. That might be the tough thing to find since the 50s is so new and there have not been very many people blazing new ground with them. But the three modifications I listed SHOULD cost you between $2000-2500 and should get you above 400 for sure.

The second way is a 75 shot nitrous oxide kit. Once again, it needs to be installed by a shop that has experience with that kind of kit. Parts plus labor will be around $1000 and should absolutely get you to 450whp. That method might require some kind of modification to the fuel system and/or ignition/timing control, which could end up costing a lot more. It's a discovery project for sure since it has not been done yet.

My recommendation to you is to start where everybody starts. Intake! Then exhaust. After you do those two things (each one should give you a small bump in hp) then you can look into an ECU tune to maximize the benefits of those two items. That's about as much as you can improve the power & performance of the car without spending big bucks.

From Tony's intake install on the FX35 2nd gen, seemed like the hp gain was so minimal for the cost.....something like 5hp from what I remember. the V8 would probably have the same issue where there wouldn't be much hp gain per cost factor right?
 
This is a surprise to me....and don't get me wrong as I didn't buy this vehicle based on immediately acquiring 50-60 HP right away for very little $'s....but I was sure minimal investment would gain big ponies. It is a V8 with a lot of potential. Intake and exhaust in many vehicles is an easy 10% gain. Apparently not with the FX?

At this point, it seems that it's difficult to gain that type of power from just an intake and exhaust.. It seems that the engineers for Infiniti did a pretty good job to begin with. I agree with you that the V8 should have potential, but as of right now, it hasn't been realized; unless you go FI.
