New FX35 Questions

We pick up the new 2011 FX35 on 12/18 -- Black / Java, premium, splash guards, roof cross-rails. Three initial questions:

? - If we ask the dealer to remove the roof cross rails (which just happened to be on the vehicle), will there be unsightly screw holes in the roof rails? Is there any reason to leave them on (we don't like the looks, but we're not so against them that we would want screw holes to show if we asked to have them removed.)

  • Coming from German cars, one feature we would like to have is to be able to depress the turn signal slightly and release it and have it blink 3 times (to signal a lane change.)
? - Is there a user-programmable setting to enable this, if not, is there a dealer-programmable setting to enable this, if not is there a "hack" that a user can implement (like the hack to my '09 Audi A4 to enable a speedo and tach needle sweep upon start-up and to open and close the sunroof and windows via the key fob)?

? - Mileage to first oil and filter change? & Subsequent mileage between oil and filter changes? (dealer sales rep says 3,750 period -- but also dealer says maximum 7,500 between changes in "normal" service; sales manager says "south of 5,000 miles between all oil changes, period, end of story.") The Germans, as you know, have much longer oil-change intervals; what is the feeling here on IS?

1- I have a 03 and i took the rails off. i had to order painted caps to cover the holes that reamined underneath. Dealer may hook you up since you just bought it, but there are holes underneath

2-no idea

3-me personally i change it every 5000 or so but i have done it at 3500 and about 7000. It always seems about the same

1.If you remove the roof rails there will be holes in the roof where the bolts hold them on. If you do remove it you would have to take down the headliner inside, which in my opinion is not worth tearing apart a brand new car you just got. Plus the rail less look doesn't look good in my opinion. It makes the car look naked. I've seen it already and it doesn't look too good in my opinion. I think painting it black would look better though at disguising it. Plus it's less of a headache.


2. The turn signal thing I'm not sure about. You could ask the dealer about that. On the 2009-2011 FX the speedo already sweeps all the way back on startup. You can only roll the windows down with the keyfob and roll them back up by inserting the valet key inside the lock on the outside. The moonroof you can't control though.



3. Most people I know change the oil right after the 1K mile break in, then change it at 3750K intervals after that switching to a synthetic oil. If you want to do it at 7500K mile intervals switch to a synthetic after break in.
 
We removed my rails in a hour or so without removing the headliner. Pop the cover off un bolted the rails and then cut the protruding bolts super easy then added the pasinted caps $65 or so at the dealer for the caps
 
No ability to change turn signal features on any generation of FX.

Oil change - if you really want a good answer to this one - go to this site to do your learning. There is no such thing as a general rule that works for everybody in every environment.

The way you drive, how far and long you drive, the average speed of the motor during your commute, climate of the area you live in... all of these amount to a very specific oil recommendation that can take your car up to 10,000 miles between oil changes - but only if you are willing to have the used oil analyzed ($25) and then act on the analysis report recommendations.

If you are not willing to put that much time and energy into it, then just go with the manufacturer's recommendation.
 
Another thing on the oil change, did the dealer say anything about Ester oil only?
