Need to replace pistons and rods?

I just picked up the winter issue of Nissan Sport. First off, it was cool to see :iS: members in the mag!

I also just read the VQ35 article. It indicated if you have 400+ WHP you need to replace the pistons and rods.

Can anyone confirm that this is a must?

I had hoped that I did the necessary engine mods to increase the life of the engine and then I read this article :embarrassed:

Thanks for any input.

400 WHP, I would think you would eventually blow your motor. Rookie was the first to blow so you could ask him how much he was pushing at the time=)

How much are you thinking of pushing? If you're questioning it, sounds like stock internals won't do.

My momma taught me that if I have nothing good to say - then say nothing at all.
But I'll just throw this in - TBS.:crossedlips::crossedlips:

Sorry AusFx I dont know the answer to your question.

rookie blew his motor when he had the stillen s2, which led him to the JWT TT route. Cube blew his engine when he had the LMS s/c.

I would think you would eventually need to upgrade your internals with 400whp just to be on the safe side. There are too many variables when you go FI.

I don't understand. If you were poking fun about an HP issue, then --->
If I said something wrong, please let me know.

Sometimes I can be a little slow...

Also, what is TBS?

TBS = Throttle Body Spacer

beefing up your internals will be good it will help keep your engine strong for a longer period of time. it will be less prone to be blown (but you still need a good tune). i think you can probably juice up the boost a bit more with stronger internals.

Hehe Brown, no offense but what info do you have to back that up?

Aus, the reason 400whp is mentioned is because of a long history on my350z.com of blown motors. There has been blown motors below 400whp on stock block, but a good chunk of them start happening between 400-450 whp (note, that's RWHP, generally on a 6MT 350Z) so it's advised not to go much higher than that because nobody has lasted very long in higher numbers on stock block.

Vinny Ten Racing up in the North East swears by the Jim Wolf kit and a good tune to give reliable power as far as about 400 whp, there's a TT 350Z that moved from New York down here to Norfolk who had his Jim Wolf kit done at VTR. I've seen it a few times, ironically the guy's name is Frank  and he says he beats the hell out of it and hasn't had a problem yet. I don't remember the mileage on the kit or the numbers he's putting down, but I wanna say it's been 22k+ miles.

With built internals (h-beam rods and CP or Arias, maybe even Wiseco pistons) you can run 400whp without a worry for a long, long time. On stock internals, it's anyone's guess when it'll go. Avoid pulling hard during colder months uphill is all I can really recommend :top: (that should be worst-case conditions to throw off the AFR and possibly cause knock).
