My Matte Black FX

:err: Unless you like the primer look... use a quality matte black paint with a darker pigment... The other example looks awesome! (gloss wheels still pop from contrast).

Wow.. this particular flat look looks like a civic spray paint. The one from Canada looked much better

Honestly, This looks like crap (my opinion only)

i'm with the majority of the ppl here, not feeling it. it's definitely different.

Hey man I can dig this. under a few conditions :)

1. Grill must be painted Gloss black , for contrast
2. Those crash bars has to go, I know you live in the city. but that's just not going to do it for me.
3. Painted headlights, I'm not sure if they are. but from a far it don't look it.
4. Also the side mirrors should of been gloss black. for contrast
5. Powder coat the wheels gloss black as well, for contrast.

But to me it's more of a super flat vs Matte (looks like a chalk board)

But I love it bro, It really don't matter on what everyone opinion is on the forum. as long as you like it. Great job

I give you more credit for pissing off the wife than wrapping the FX.

It may not be a hit with everyone but I love seeing someone go through with it for us to evaluate. Cheers!

my fx looked like that for a little while:

maybe if you polish & wax it enough to not look so completely flat. I'd bet you can get that to a very low gloss by polishing/waxing... that might look crazy on an exotic car, I'd take a bentley or a murcelago or a maybach in that finish no problem I guess if I has to, but on an average car it just looks like it's ready for a paintjob I think... to me the car has got to be so sick in it's own right that it don't even matter that it has no friggin paint on it..., it's just that sick. as nice as the fx is I think the stock body is not sick enough to look good with no paint.

Which brand of vinyl wrap is that? Looks very flat to me. There are high performance cast vinyls that are designed to be used for motorsport wrapping that are more "matte" looking. Kudos for your courage though. I think a coat of a good sealant or vinyl dressing will make it look better, as someone else suggested.

Thanks for all the feeback everyone. You guys definitely speak your minds, as brutally honest as it may be. I completely agree that a satin finish with more sheen is the way to go, but in this case the sample swatch I saw of the satin black looked like a normal black vinyl that was just dull in need of cleaning. I think when it comes to the matte look, only actual paint will have the best results (if you have the $5K to spend on it). I'll post more pictures when the weather clears up in the East Coast, and will definitely show up at the next FX Meet before I remove the entire thing and be allowed to sleep in the bedroom again!

props for being unique, and like others said the courage to take this project on. Sad that you will remove it so fast, but i guess the couch gets uncomfortable.

do you have any other wrapping plans for the fx after this? some members have been talking about wrapping the fx in digital camo, maybe youd be interested in checking it out. good luck! and keep us updated

btw, is this you? think you may have been spotted before the wrapping... no clue what color is behind the matte black but the bumper guard appears to be the same from what i can tell...

It didnt hurt my pocket any, so as long as you like it, more power to you. I gotta tell you though that it does turn heads but for the wrong reasons.

Ahh..I see that he used the 3M brand. I wouldn't be surprised if that was a matte black vinyl that is primarily used for printing (2 mil thick), which would normally require a clear overlaminate on top of the vinyl (another 2 mil). That is probably why you were only charged $1600 and it looks like primer.

There are matte black vinyl wraps that are supposed to be used as they are, because it already has an overlamite on it and is 4 mil thick. Wrapping your car would probably cost you around $3k as these wraps cost alot more.

UPDATE to Matte Black Wrap

It's been a couple of months since I've had my FX wrapped in matte vinyl and I just wanted to give an update on the reactions I've been getting from the street. Contrary to the opinions from certain forum members, the feedback from people in NY/NJ has been overwhelmingly positive. From drooling teenage valet patrons and mesmorized car wash and gas attendants, to thumbs up on the highway and middle-aged mom's at supermarkets that walk over to ask about the color, I have never received so much attention since I had Davin Spinning Wheels back when they first came out 10 years ago. Even car professionals (audio installers, dealership workers, and body shops) have given me props on the look.

Granted most people aren't asking me where they can get the same thing done for their ride (except one fellow FX owner), but they all think the outcome turned out well. A lot of this response is due to the amazement of the fact that everything is a vinyl wrap rather than paint which everyone automatically assumes. It's like most people have heard of this mythic paint affect but few have actually seen it in person, which is probably why everyone insists on touching wrap. But either way I haven't heard anything negative other than my wife's criticism, who isn't budging, and my friends who after making all the initial chalkboard and primer jokes do admit that they like the stealth "batman" look.

Therefore, if you are into taking chances and bringing a lot of attention to your FX then this is an upgrade worth pursuing. However if you'd rather blend in with all the other FX's out there and prefer to invest your money on sleeper performance upgrades then this mod is probably too extreme. In the end everyone will have their own opinion, but this mod has gotten the exact response I was going for even though the flat look isn't quite what I was hoping for (ie satin paint trumps vinyl wraps). See you guys at the next meet!
