My 04 FX35 won't start.. Help Please!

Last Friday after work I went to start my FX35 to no avail. When I turned the key all I got was a clicking noise. My dome lights and headlights came on
just fine but the truck wouldn't start. One of my co-workers gave me a jump and the truck immediately started. The next morning the same thing happened, I got another jump and drove straight to Kragen to test my battery. The guy at Kragen suggested I let them charge it which I did. After a few hours they informed me that my battery wouldn't hold a charge and suggested I purchase a new one. Fast foward to tonight...after work I picked up a new battery (DURALAST BATTERY) at AUTOZONE. After installing the battery I tried to start the truck. It comes on fine but shuts right off. As long as I keep giving it gas it will stay on, but if you try to just let it idle it
shuts right off. can someone please help me out here..
 
Pretty sure I was the first to have this problem.....got this on my 04 at 25k miles (6months ago)

Could be Carbon Deposits on the Throttle body. Check the Throttle body for the deposits around the butterfly.

Symptoms: Start car...revs to about 1000rpm....and then just dumps. You try again and give it some gas...but it will dump again.

I got this when I just changed out to a Stillen intake and Z tube....for whatever reason the computer "forgets" where the throttle plate is at... and needs the TB cleaned in order to run correctly again.....Dealer charged me $80...Pep Boys would do it for around $40...DIY for about $10.

This has become a common problem with the FX... and should be the first thing checked when car just dumps when you try and start vehicle.

the throttle body is the housing with the flap that controls the throttle. it is at the very beginning of the intake, right where the intake tube connects to the engine. if you take that tube off you should see the throttle plate. it will look just about closed, but there is a very small air gap around it, it doesn't close completely shut. this is where the problem comes in, carbon from combustion eventually makes it's way up there & closes the already small passage past that throttle blade & the problem your describing could be caused by that.

pull the hose, gently push that flap open & run your finger over the sides around the circumference of the housing where the throttle plate would fall when closed... it's probably black & oily & dirty. a clean rag with some carburetor cleaner, lacquer thinner or even gasoline & you should be able to clean it, wipe it with a wet rag with the solvent/cleaner & you'll See it coming out really black... repeat until it's somewhat clean. you should see a nice difference in idle stability if this is indeed your problem.

this should be cleaned once in a while in any dry throttle system but most don't touch it until theres a problem. if your to intimidated to try this yourself just about any mechanic will know exactly what to do if you tell them you want your throttle body cleaned... hope this helps View attachment 160813

This should take care of it...if this isnt the problem...it could possibly be a cam sensor. The senor keeps track of the cam position...and if messed up..will no tlet the car start properly. But your problem sounds like the TB. Good luck:cool:
 
i had this problem of it starting and dieing on me a couple of months back.

you could try unplugging the negative terminal off the battery overnight and plugging it back in in the morning and see if that helps
 
ok thanks a bunch guys. so far the FX is back alive.. im not sure if it takes a while for the vehicle to notice a new battery was replaced.. but like i said its up and running.. im going to drive it a few times around my block...

the only problem i got was this morning when i was pumping some gas, when i started the car back up. it had shut down on me.. but after that everything went pretty well.. i will keep you guys posted...
 
i really dont think it is going to take a while for the FX to realize it has a new battery, as you say. when you replace a battery in something, it works right then if the battery is the issue...
 
Same exact symptoms I had...

go to autozone...get yourself some TB or Carb cleaner. Take off the intake tube(1 screw) located at TB. Spray cleaner on a clean rag and open up TB plate. Just wipe off the black residue or TB...done probably in 15 minutes and $10 later. Or go to ANY mechanic and ask for a TB cleaning...$30-40.
