Well I was installing the factory trailer hitch and had the muffler off. So i decided to take it for a drive with it off. I was expecting it to be super loud. Well it was not loud at all. It sounded really nice. The wife even liked it. It was still quiter then my G37 with FI HFC's and Cat back. If noting after market comes out for this truck I am going to make my own cat back I think. The thing just sounds too sexey with it off.

but when you had your muffler off isnt it running like a straight pipe?
cuase i heard straight pips from 35 and 45s and to me it sounds like a big a$$ lawn mower lool..

but hey thats my own opinion.
if you like go for it :tup:

never heard the FX45 or 35 with straight pipes. but the FX50 sound really nice. it still has the cats and resinators. Just has a nice growel not lowd and annoying.

Quick bump. I saw JBaker's youtube clip of him removing the mufflers and using straight pipes

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q0HLk02maWY

1.) What type of straight pipes did he use?

2.) I suspect that I won't throw any CEL or any other lights ?

3.) I use this for mostly work and don't want it to become annoying. Has anyone done this and what are you experiences?

I've done it and it sounds good. I always get compliments and First Gen owners always approach me to ask what kind of work I've done to the exhaust. Been procrastinating on video but I will post something soon.

I don't think he used any particular brand of pipes but he did have mandrel bends fabricated. I didn't have mandrel bends done (IMO it wasn't worth the extra $).

Still haven't had any warning lights come on as a result of this mod.

No it's not annoying. For the most part you only hear a huge difference when you are accelerating and it doesn't sound like overkill. IMO it should have sounded like this from the factory. When you are coasting it purrs doesn't sound loud at all. Lastly it sounds ridiculously good from a cold start. Highly recommended if you don't want to spend for a full exhaust but want some extra growl without sounding like an atv or dirt bike lol.

Maybe I should just cut the mufflers and the cats off lol

Does anyone know if you can get mil eliminators so that if you put very HFC cats on to get rid of the engine light?

neva4self, do you have pics of the underbody when you were at the shop? Would love to see how you did them. and how much did it run you just curious? Notice any performance increase from more freeflow?

I heard jdbaker had put the mufflers back on....I think I remember him saying that it was too much for him after awhile.

Aww man, I get all worked up when I hear that acceleration video. A woody every time.

I heard it on Kenny's FX50 in person and all I can say is that its LOUD lol but it sounds good. He has straight pipes with the mufflers cut off I believe.

did you drive in it?

would you consider doing it on your FX? He didn't remove the cats did he?

I would imagine it would be too loud for regular street driving.
I went through that years ago, I drove a 340 Duster with wide open headers for a week:eek.:. Karen and then the Police put an end to that :disapointed:.

Nope but I was inside of it when he drove it through the parking lot. Just driving through a parking lot at 1100 rpm it protrudes through the cabin. I'm sure it's very loud in the cabin on the highway and street driving.

I'm sure he kept the cats on there.

Ya I agree with Wayne the Borla setup would be the best, not too loud just perfect
