Metal chunks in the rear diff fluid 2008 FX35

Hi friends,

I am hoping to get some advice on my 08 fx35 from you all. I took my car to a mechanic for maintenance and they found a few metal chunks while doing the rear differential exchange. I am attaching the picture of what they found. The mechanic mentioned that he doesn’t do differential and asked me to take it to a specialty shop. I am wondering if you know if this is serious and whether I should stop driving it immediately. I don’t feel anything when I am driving and it seems to be fine. I appreciate any advice and recommendation. Thanks a lot.

10 bucks says those metal fragments fell out of the mechanics ears. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

What he said...lots of things break, but your differential will probably be one of the last things you have to worry about.

Differentials are one thing Infiniti/Nissan make pretty near bulletproof.

pay to have them or another shop take the cover off and find out. if it's true then you'll find more metal bits and chipped gears. get a new gasket for the job so it'll help justify the cost. do it for peace of mind. i hope they tried to blow smoke up your you know what. but then you really don't want the pumpkin gears to lock up on you while driving.

I agree with 1bad_fx45

Those chunks are big enough that you'd probably find out where they came from pretty easily by taking the diff cover off. Open that sucker up, put the car in neutral, spin the wheels to watch the diff gears move, and look to see if there are any obvious chunks missing.

FYI what you're showing us is not something typically experienced with our vehicles.
