mechanical fan replacement

Have been researching the FX45 mechanical fan/electric replacement procedure thread (2005-2009) on the org. and I am close to pulling the trigger on the project. I have read through the install PDF written up by Sanjoses2k and its pretty tight. Two changes I'll be asking my install crew to make to the original document is to create a bracket for the fan (prefer to not have it mount directly to the radiator) and to find a different temp pick up than the radiator fin mounted unit. My questions for now-Is this mod avoided due to complexity and cost Vs. return? For the FX45 it sounds like its a nice bump at 10-15HP/15-20lbs of torque and 1.5-2 MPG. My shop quoted me $800.00 for the project. Since not that many 45's have stepped up and most of the installs have been DIY's there are not a lot of comparisons out there. Sounds like it could be a 6-8 hour project so maybe the price is fair......

Input on project/returns/price?

When I was contemplating on getting this mod done from DaveO about 3 years ago the cost for him to do this install no more then $200. But that is from me providing the parts. $800 sounds pretty high IMO but then again its a shop and not a fellow enthusiest. I will evetually get this done lol. Good luck and good thing you are stepping up to the plate and getting this done.

Thanks Doc-Living in the city/without a garage my wrenching opportunities are severely limited and I have to turn to the paid pros. The shop I contacted for the fan project normally does my suspension work and I am wondering if it might be in my best interest to check in with a couple of performance radiator shops.....I'll track how it goes down and give you my best guesstimate on what it gives back when installed.

Hey-Between your Nismo and your UTR-Y pipe which do you think gave you the best bang for your buck? Would it be worth just doing just the UTR-Y?

I did the nismo 1st then about a month or so later did the y pipe. I got a pretty new nismo with 25 miles on it for 500 and the utr y for 400 so its a toss up for bang for the buck lol. But nismo would be my first choice then the y pipe. The y pipe did give me a throttier tone and it really tied in well since the exhaust system was now all 3in piping.

Got it-I assumed the install timing was either at the same time or fairly close. Great price on the Nismo BTW......

did anyone ever come up with a better way to mount the electrical fan? i read this thread while it was going on a while ago.

while i liked the idea....... i didn't wanna ram stuff through my radiator.

aiya asked me to do this mod for him a long time ago, but I was very aprehensive about it cause I don't like the fan mounting or even the quality of the components being used so I told him wait, let me research the best way to really do this & be as reliable as factory, which to me if it isn't then it's not worth even doing.

I have since found a great stand alone fan control & I plan to do his with a good fan control module & then use a fx35 fan assy which should do the job & mount up just fine... if for some reason heavier duty cooling was required or necissary after that point then I would add an auxilary front mount push fan type setup like limo's & heavy duty service vehicles use, but honestly I think the fx35 fan would be more than fine. the module I found was I think dakota digital, may have been something else gotta search again...

ahh. that's right. i remember you saying you were going to look into that..... depending on the price of the fan setup like that, it's a great mod with pretty good bang/buck. thanks turbo...

EDIT: not sure that this is 100% correct, or the same application for all years, but, here is a quick reference (05 35 searched)

factory fans are big $$$ but aftermarket factory replacement type fans are not so bad, under $200 & they should still last years of normal use... that's the only non OE part I used in reconstructing my fx was an aftermarket fan assy & an aftermarket ac condensor, but both are fine going on 2 years later & a fraction of the cost...

TC-If you can come up with what you consider to be a better alternative for the thermo pick up component and fan mounting I'd be more comfortable moving forward. My tech is ready to do the install but with the original gear and install instructions.

I remember you stepping up towards the end on the org thread and saying you were not completely down with the direction the install was heading then you got busy....imagine that.....

Not familiar with the 35 fan set-up, is there an existing mounting bracket that we can use?

should mount right up, which is why I prefer that method really

this is the module I think I will use when I do aiya's:

I don't know exactly what I would do for the actual sender unit yet, one option I think I would consider if there is no place to mount one proper into the intake or something would be to use a hose adaptor, cut a rad hose & install a union that is tapped for a thread in sensor, but I'll bet there is a better more direct & proper way, gotta get under the engine cover & see. there are also bolt on senders & stuff, that much I haven't solidified a best approach yet really...
