Loud thump noise from Tranny ??

Several times now, when switching gears from park to reverse, there is this very loud thump noise coming from the tranny. Took it to dealer, of course they could not replicate the problem. I have 2010 FX35 with about 10K Miles on it. Last time I heard this kind of sound in my old Murano tranny , it turend out to be a major tranny recall later on...:eek.:

That is definitely your tranny. happens to me mostly on the incline. idea is to activate the hand brake long before you release your foot off the brake pedal after shifting to any gear then releasing slowly after engaging into any gear.

here's a relative thread. post#16 is very informative. make sure when you shift to park, activate the hand brake and then release the brake pedal. if you're shifting to drive or reverse, keep the hand brake engaged and brakes pressed and release both after engaging.

This is normal mine does it too along with my other two cars. It's because the place where it's parked is a slight incline. Even slightly slanted will do it. This happens from not putting on the parking brake when your suppose to. Next time after you choose where you park shift the car to neutral, set the parking brake, then put it in park. When you getting ready to move the car and leave release the parking brake after you shifted to reverse or drive. This keeps the gearbox from thumping.

^Assuming you don't have a transmission issue, this will solve your problem. It's also good practice in general.

mine does it also but when there is a incline, but listen to this, i have a issue with a metallic thumping sound when i change gears from reverse to drive and vice versa.. i checked my 2 universal joints on ground and its tight, but when 4 wheels jacked up there is play i wonder if this is normal

always happens on an an incline.

But whats gets me worried is a thump when switching gears a bit late on manual mode.

I never use the manual brake even on a slight incline.....over prolonged use, I doubt it would cause any issues right?

Not using is not an issue. Using it is a general practice. A good one. Keeps the vehicle from moving while parking and prevents load on the transmission. 1st gen fx's have to be careful. Don't know much abt the newer models.

happens to me when its parked incline, but if the road is even, the tranny shouldnt do that.

You can try this parking method to avoid hearing that noise(i do it all the time):
- when the car is stopped, keep your foot on the brake, move the gear to N
- keep depressing the brake, while applying the hand brake
- release the brake
- fully depress the brake again
- move the sector to P

You shouldnt hear any noise if you follow these steps when changing from P to R. Hope it helps.
