Help!

I have the following lights on the dash: AWD, SLIP, NO VDC and ABS.

After searching the forum, I couldn't find anyone else with this combination. No other lights are on.

Changes:

  1. I switched from my summer tires to my winter tires, but I put a few thousand miles on them before these lights come on. And this has never happened when I switched before.
  2. My car is aligned to my 265/40/22 22" wheel setup and not my 265/50/20 20" wheel setup, but I never had an issue before.
  3. Harsh winter -- snow, salt, etc... Not sure if this screwed up some sensor?

I don't have the brake light on the dash, but I still checked the brake pads all around and brake fluid, no issues here. Full fluid and a lot of pad left.

Lights come on and they shut off after a few miles of driving. Then they come back on.

I have a OBII reader and checked if there were any codes even though the SES light wasn't on -- no codes.

I checked the AWD fuse near the driver's seat -- nope, not either. I also had an incident after driving a few miles, there was a grinding sound, almost like the parking brake was engaged then off. I double checked and it was off.

Any thoughts? I have a 2003 Infiniti FX45.

i have heard that this problem is very common among Nissan vehicles, almost all new models. I was going to suggest AWD wiring issue and steering column issue for your AWD and VDC lights on since you mentioned harsh winter weather.

Found this in case this helps others:

Can you explain the steering column issue? I just had my steering tightened from the bolt on the steering column.

Thanks!

i was assuming that the steering column sensors detected a problem given that you drive in harsh winter conditions. been drifting in the snow lately? in my previous car, i had the vdc light come on twice because of messed up steering angle and required alignment done. as to the AWD wiring issue, the snow and the salt could have rusted the wiring. possibilities. for all I know, may be the REAL reason for your problem is low brake fluid. you know what? Please check your brake fluid also..

Good points. Yeah, that was the first thing I checked after reading the forums, unfortunately it wasn't the brake fluid level.

so after a week of driving around with the lights on, I went to a $5.00 car wash. Lights still on when I got home.

Today, I drove it and after a mile of driving, all the lights disappeared. Dirty sensor? Is that possible?

Oh well, we'll see if it stays off, but it appears like that was the "fix." Having my buddy mechanic check out the wheel sensors to be safe.

The wheel sensor was what first came to mind, after googling it I saw the confirmation with the link I posted (coincidentally it was the first link to come out of googling).

More than likely it was a dirty sensor. My Z4 and I went muddin' (don't ask). The DSC (dynamic stability control) light came on, along with DTC (dynamic traction control), and something else (can't remember). Turned out that my wheels sensors were caked in mud, including everything else lol.

so ended up being the front left wheel speed sensor.

it was dirty and they tried to clean it but it was pretty bad so they just put in a new one.

So today is the third time that my AWD, ABS and traction control have come on. The car is driving fine and I’m trying to figure out what can be the issue. I recently had all rotors and pads replaced and the light had been on before that but got them to turn off. Today it’s rainy outside and slushy and on the way home I noticed they all came back on and stayed on.
