I've heard knocks from front suspension and its not as tight as it should be ( compared with friend of my FX).

What should be checked first? Stabilizer links, bushings?

Is it during a specific activity (ie turning or going over bumps)? I would check the upper shock mount first to ensure it is tight and the bushing is good.

I had the strange rattle from the right front. I read it could be an internal panel loose but after I installed new shocks (I have over 140k) it went away. The old shock didn't seem blown but the shaking did sound like the shaft was loose.

I have also had knocks before that were from the sway bar link bolt being too tight and causing it to bind. It creeked badly over large bumps.

sway bar link. If the nut holding it is loose by a little bit, theres a pretty disturbing knocking sound. My links were hand tight but still had the sound. A spin with a ratchet and it sent away.

Look for the DIY on replacing struts and springs. Torque specs for the sway bar links are listed in there
