Knocking - Low RPM Knock

I still don't understand the whole knocking thing that well. I just can't seem to hear it. I know KNFX had an issue with it and even tried to show me in person and I don't think I really noticed it then. I hear a lot of lifter tap though.

I only heard mine with window up, ac off, and at night when it is nice and quiet. It's a tick tick tick type of noise.

When in park and slightly pressing the gas my engine makes a knocking sound, has been happening for the last couple weeks. Also this happens in all gears, including neutral. I know it is not the gas because I went through a couple tanks already.

Any ideas?

I know this is an old thread but if you can remember I'm having the same issue but my 2007 M35X only does it a when it warms up my question is did yours do this when cold
at first start

Yes, the knock was there at all times, it may be harder to hear from a cold start since the idle is higher.

I'm not sure why I couldn't "replicate the problem" when we met up, only thing I could think of was that it was just too noisy to hear since we were next to the highway. I had two different knocks though, a low rpm knock, and a knock at idle. Either way, that car is long gone. Good riddance.

I got another update from the dealership (Riverside Infiniti). Infiniti wants to make sure the car (M35....not my FX35) wasn't abused.... WTF?!

I bought the car with 18.9k miles on it in August of 2010. I did my first oil change when I first took delivery of the vehicle with Mobil 1 oil and filter. I also changed the drainage plug with a fumoto valve to make things easier for me in the future. I did another oil change when the car hit 21k miles after almost a year of ownership. So i only put on just over 2k miles on the car in the year that I owned it (it's literally my once a week cruiser car). I haven't driven the car past 70MPH ever since I bought it -_-;

They said there is a gap in service record since the last time the car visited the dealership which was at 12k miles. Sure, there was a gap of 6k miles, but I'm sure the engine can handle that amount of delay in oil change. Ever since I took ownership of it, I babied it!

Well, the manager said they will open up the valve cover and drop the oil pan and see if there are signs of abuse. I don't believe they will see anything, but I would hate to be blamed if there is. I have 40k miles and 3 years left on my powertrain warranty!.

Maybe they think I race the car due to me lowering the car and the Tanabe mufflers I have -_-;

Further updates to come!

Update - Good News

I got a call from the dealer and Infiniti has approved the replacement of my short block. The car should be up and running by the end of this week of Monday!

For those that are under warranty, you should take care of this if there is a knock. I'm quite happy with the turn of events since I get a new engine out of this ordeal :tup:

Final update will come after I drive it!

Thinking I may have a low rpm knock. According to my car fax Ive got 4 months left on my powertraine warranty. 2005 fx35 with 53k on it.. well see. its not very noticeable, only with ac off and when its quiet.

Car is at the dealer now. They put their ear to a long flat head screw driver sitting on the pulley and it was clear we could hear a loud tap. They are going to take the belts off and see if the sound is still there. Anyone experience this?

I had the same issue with the loud knocking from a stop to slow acceleration. My problem however was due to pure ignorance on my part. I let it go thinking Id bring it in to the dealership for some related TSB's. It then went from knocking to a loud rattle. So I thought Id check the dipstick. It was completely dry. I refilled with 4 quarts and some change and the knocking stopped. Im doing a complete oil change this weekend most likely with M1 and K&N filter. Then to the dealership.

wassup man,

i know this was a while back but seeing if you can help me im hearing a engine noise from my car, its more noticeable when u shift from park to drive. In park you cant hear it as much but its their its a low knocking sound more noticeable from the driver side then passenger. they replaced your shortblock for you? did you have a check engine light going i dont have one.

mechanic did a engine flush, put in lucas oil treatment and synthetic blend oil said to drive it for a while see if its still their i think its louder then runnin on conventional oil but sounds close to your story but wanted to ask first. noticeable at idle in drive and when u press gas a little it goes a little louder then if you drive i can hear it but if u ask people will disappear in exhsust.

Ok! Thread revival.

I had my short block replaced in August of 2011 @ 21K miles. It is now April of 2013 and I have 26k miles on the odometer and the damn tap/knock is back to haunt me again on my M35... Same as last time, the sound is only there when I put it on drive or reverse at very low RPM.

I tried the usual stuff like try different gas brand and fuel treatment.... not working. I check the fuel damper and it's definitely not coming from there. I've isolated the sound to the passenger side front of the engine. Will this be the location of cylinder #1? Cylinder 1 failed last time when they replaced my short block.

Another thing I noticed was that one of the accessory pulley (top pulley on the passenger side - power steering) is slightly wobbly (about 1 mm displacement). I don't have my FX right now since it is the shop for repairs from being rearended so I can't check it that's normal. Can someone check for me?

I doubt it's related to pulley since it is the exact same sound I heard from the cabin. I'll probably take the car into the dealer on Tuesday, but first I want to remove the accessory belt to see if it is the pulley that's causing this.

Well, the sound is the most pronounced around that area, especially near the accessory pulley. When I get back from my over-night vacation, I will try taking the power steering belt off. If the sound goes away, it was the pulley, but if that doesn't solve it, it'll be back at Riverside Infiniti for another warranty work... SOB! I hardly drive this car!

I have the same issue. This knocking sound when im in park. Now its a rattling noise when in park. When in park and you give it gas it rattles. In drive its quite. I put the FX on ramps and i had my dad rev it while i was underneath. I pin point the noise to where the tranny bolts up to the engine. This is making me nervous. Im at 66000 miles and its a 07. I didnt go for the speedometer recall yet. So the miles are a few less. I wonder if the powertrain warranty from infiniti will kick in on this.

I dropped off my car at the dealership this morning. I spoke to the same service adviser that took care of me when I had my first problem and he was a bit stumped as well. I got my loaner and waiting for what they have to say.... I only have 26k miles on my 08 M35 and thankfully, I'm covered under the powertrain warranty until 72k miles or 6 years... I'm still good. I just hope this is my last visit to the dealership for this problem.
