K&N drop filters vs cold air pipe intakes?

I have a 2011 fx awd, i dont quite know if i have a dual intake or not, but i was thinking of dropping a k&n in there, i heard you get better MPG, also i saw some pics out there where some fx owners have dual cold air intakes, anyone know if theyre available for 2011 fx's ? and which would be the better choice? thanks!:skull:

All 2ng gen models have dual intakes. I'm not too sure if you will see any MPG gains though as I didn't see any when using the K&N drop in filters before. But then again you could give it a try.

aah , thanks fire0nic, so when is an fx a 1st gen and a 2nd gen"? sorry i dont know about this ;/

1st generation FX is the 2003-2008 model years. That was the previous design. 2nd generation is the 2009-2012 and up model years. AKA the current design that's out right now.

Exhaust offers gains without tuning or ECU reset. Intake and air/fuel mods are more touchy sometimes you may see a slight gsin but most of the time its driver perception based on the underhood growl effect. If you want to maximize an intske you should tune but the tune is much more expensive than any available CAI. If you do more performance mods that push the efficiency of the system-exhaust, intake etc you will feel everything come into play with a well done tune.

To sdd, K&N drop ins do VERY little on the FX system, they are fairly efficient as-is.

What the K&Ns do offer over the stock paper filters is the fact that you don't have to replace 'em. You simply maintain them with the recharge kit every so often. But it is a correct statement that you really won't see much in the way of performance gains from the drop-ins. IMHO, still worth the minor investment vs having to buy replacement paper filters.

I used to run K&N filters in a few other rides. I really never noticed much difference so I prefer to run the OEM.
Just be careful not to over oil your K&N filter when you re oil it, if you you use too much it will affect your maf sensors.

I grew tired of cleaning and re-oiling. As G said above the opportunity to create MAF issues is always there. I had a Landcruiser that never quite adapted to the K&N oil, the MAF would always get fouled.

Personally I found replacing the filters easier than cleaning and oiling. Took a few minutes vs. hours waiting for it to dry and such. I ran an HKS foam drop in for a while on the stock airbox. It sounded a little better, but no performance difference. Now I have a Popcharger and like the sound, but hate having to clean/oil.

Yeah, I kept my clean OEM filters so that I could re-oil the K&Ns and still run the car while they dried. I usually go back over the filters with a clean shop towel to remove any extra oil, especially around the housing.
