Just purchased '04 FX35 (help)

Hi,

I just purchased a used '04 Infiniti FX35-awd yesterday.
I noticed the hood (the engine) gets really hot when I turn off the ignition. It gets hot for about 2 hrs.... is that normal?

Also, I noticed a lil water (maybe oil) underneath the front passenger's side (pretty close to the right tire)... Is that the AC water leaking or something else? It's not too much, but I did notice it.

Thanks.

First off Congrats on the purchase!!! The AC is located on the passenger side and its standard for it to drip a lil bit. Explain the first thing about heat a lil better

Thx for the quick response!!

Ah, I'll ignore the lil water dripping in the passenger's side.. it's just a small amount.. I wasn't sure if it was something important (like oil, etc.. haha)...

In regards to engine heating up... the hood really heats up after 10 mins of turning off the ignition. It stays heated for about 1:30-2hrs... is that normal? I had a 4 cylinder honda accord.. so I assumed this FX35 engine takes up more time to cool down...
is there anything I can check to see if I have enough coolant/radiator/motor oil, etc... I just want to make sure this is normal...... as you can tell, I don't know much about cars... thx for understanding...

Welcome to iS!
I assume you mean it stays hot after you turn off the ignition. Engines get pretty hot under there and the hood is right above it. Heat rises. Oil is black and thick, water is clear. You should be able to tell which is which. You could also leave the a/c off and see if it still does it.

Yes, the hood will heat up if the ignition is off.. The car is not moving and no fans are running while the car is off, so the heat only has one place to go......up.

Oh and it probably gets hotter after you stop becaus no air is running over the engine so all the heat goes into the hood. I've done engine work after turning it off and touching anything metal will give you a bit of a burn. Where in Cali are you?
Edit: jeff you're lucky I'm on my stupid iPhone haha.

1. As long as the stuff dripping is clear and has a water like viscosity then your fine

2. Ya i mean i guess you could say it takes a while to cool down but thats no diff than any other car

3. Coolant= Clear Canister in the bottom left of the engine bay

4. Motor oil= dip stick just to the right of the middle of the engine cover

Any Mods in the near future?

Thx guys! you guys really rock.. better than Infiniti techs!!! I emailed them yesterday and still no response.. i'm glad I found this forum...

Ah, that makes sense... I guess no fan = heated hood.. hahaha...
I live in Diamond Bar... it was high 90 degrees today.... =(

one last question guys.. the previous owner said he had K&N air filter installed... I did my research and I know that this is the reusable filters.. I tried to open the air filter box located on the bottom right side of the engine comparment.. but I just cant open it.. I unclipped the two locks and tried opening.. but failed miserably.. how do you guys open the dang box? haha

There are more clips I think. Feel around the edges. I'll google your location as I don't know where that is. I moved from Dallas today so it doesn't feel too hot to me haha.

Ya i havent had the stock air box for a couples years now but if i remember right there are more than 2 clips

Welcome to the Scene and congrats on the FX!
There are 4 clips for the intake box and it will take more then the clips alone to remove that filter. Usually its easiest to unclamp the intake hose near the throttle body and wiggle it a bit to push the box backwards thereby giving it bit more space to remove the filter.
