In case anyone was wondering, there are Jim Wolf Technology VK45DE camshafts that are available.

"Titan V8 S-2 Camshafts now in stock!
Date:8/16/2007
JWT thanks Chris Forsberg for his help in the test and development of our VK56 S2 Camshafts. Chris's VK56 powered 350Z was the perfect test bed for testing the new S2 Camshafts. S2 Cams are an excellent choice for a Titan Pre-runner or any VK56 powered Nissan that needs to run hard to the redline (and beyond with JWT Valve Springs and Reflash). Dyno testing has shown Increases of 30+WHP in the Titan truck. PART# AVK56-N00S2 (S2 Camshafts are also now available for VK45 powered Nissans.)"

256deg .430"lift (compare to stock at 232deg. .346"lift) 219.5deg@.050"lift
PRICE: $1,198.00

I'm not sure what the difference is between the VK56DE camshafts and the VK45DE camshaft, but they are there.

I would have done this a while ago if it wasn't for the difficult install. A few local tuners told me 20 hours of labor or roughly $1,900.

Ooooooohh....these are sexy! I would hang them on my wall while I save the money for the install.

Is there anyone out there that has done a camshaft install? The tuner shops told me due to the placement of the cams in the VK45DE, they have to rip apart most of the engine to do the install.

Good find Ed! But tell me, how are you able to find the time to for all these parts lately with your new born son?!? I think you still have too much time these days, hahaha.

I've been late in sharing my finds... =)

Ha, I'm up longer these days now so more time on the internet... I'm a walking zombie since he needs to be fed every 2 hours, sometimes even every hour.

Good times and thanks for driving me crazy with all the frigging performance parts-My first born really helped drive my business with one of my clients in Hong kong. He was under the impression I was amazingly driven and on my game 24/7 when I was pretty much up all night anyway helping my wife with baby girl #1 (same deal happened with with #2). Really hope he's not an IS member and reading this right now.

Hang in there boss! Thread jack BUT its all about the children man..... :)

Here are the springs and shims, not needed unless you want to push your car hard and above the redline:
http://www.jimwolftechnology.com/customer_part_detail.asp?PartID=448

Includes 24 springs and shims for use with JWT race cams or JWT street cams with rev. limit raised above 7000 rpm. The included shims replace the stock base shims to obtain the correct installed height (36MM). 43lb@on seat & 136lb@12.5MM lift. For VK45DE and VK56DE includes 32 springs and shims for $318.40.

Considering the price of the camshafts and the install might as well step up for the springs and shims. If the gain on the Titan is 30WHP I wonder how the 45 would fair. Seems like JWT would have to have some feedback on performance.

I would think at minimum, 20 whp in comparison to a VK56DE. And yes, I would do camshafts and springs and shims at the same time.

Do it.. do it...

Camshafts, intake, exhaust, tune = great NA VK45DE!!!! I would think with all those combined, a healthy gain should be felt and proven on dyno.

Only one way to find out.

+1, I might tackle the install with a more mechanically inclined friend. He thinks between the two of us and the manual, it should take a day or a day and a half.

Take labor out of the equation, 20 hp sounds really nice, who knows with a tune, that 20 could be 30.

I need to think this out, since I'm high mileage, I might replace my piston and do low compression in case I want to try a FI later on.

Go Ed! If you can make it a DIY that's worth it based on the price of other mods as a percentage gain. Since I'm not a DIY guy (DEF not at that level) 3k is a LOT of cash, that would get me 25-30% of the way towards an FI set-up...

Update:

Cams are custom built, $1,198 if done with a batch when they grind camshafts. If you want them done "out of batch" or faster, it's an extra $250.

You will also need the following:
1) valve and spring kit, $9.95 x 4 valves x 8 cylinders = $318.40
2) new valve lifters, you cannot re-use original ones as they won't work with the new camshafts. Since they are similar in price, suggest purchasing the diamond-like carbon coating (DLC) valve lifters from the VQ37VHR. I'll have to get in there an measure to see exactly which valve lifter is needed (there are several sizes, ranging from I think 7.82 - 8.40). These are roughly $20/each so $20 x 32 = $640. Just note Nissan suggests using ester motor oil (I'm hoping synthetic will be fine, but there are reports of valve "chatter" but no harm to engine).

$2,156.40 in parts.

HP gain has been guesstimated by JWT to 28 whp. Install on VK56DE (Nissan Titan, Infiniti QX56) takes about 10 labor hours at a typical $95/hour = $950.

So who's first? Lance?

Well, I did step up for the new style fan conversion but that was considerably cheaper :) So the parts cost has gone up but the install price has gone down leaving us at roughly the same overall price.....BUT the WHP estimate sounds better. How do you think the torque curve will look on this, steep up front then flatten out? Costly, but I do like the idea of this mod. With the camshafts, all the standard mods and a good dyno tune can a VK push 300 WHP in NA form?

Krazzzyyyyy... LOl

I cant wait to see what you end up doing Ed..

I already told you through our PM's of what I am going through right now.. LOL

Ed, let me know if you need help with any of this. I've been looking at FSM diagrams for the inside of our engine lately

Yes, please help!

I am trying to plan this out so it is done correctly and in the proper order.

1) Engine Port and Polish of the intake and exhaust ports. Cheapest quote I received is $675 here http://www.eddiesvalvegrinding.com/ Too bad it's in New Jersey. They estimate a 20 hp gain, but I realistically expecting 5-10 hp gain, if that? Maybe with all mods combined and tune, 20 hp maybe real?

2) Next is to install JWT S2 cams with JWT Springs and Shims. Eddie's Valve Grinding quoted at $475 installed vs $1,900 dealership and aftermarket tuning shops.

3) Also, at the same time, have VQ37VHR valve lifters installed. KIERAN -- would you be able to tell what size lifters I would need to get? I'm not sure if your friend has the specs/blue print of the VK45DE S2 Cam, they are custom ground from the VK56DE S2 Cams. This would be great as would save some down time of my car being out of commission as they would have to measure after they install then order the correct lifters.

4) Replace pistons to a different compression?? I am going to stay N/A as I don’t want the headaches of a FI. 10.9:1 is already high, not sure on regular pump gas that you would want to risk going any higher for slight increase in HP.

5) Swap Fan for e-Fan, thanks to Logan.

6) AWD Dyno tune.

Anything else? Port/Polish, JWT S2 Cams, JWT Intake, HKS Exhaust, OEM e-Fan, then Dyno-tune. It would be huge to see close to 300 AWD WHP N/A. With the parasitic loss, I don't think it's possible, but I'm hoping close enough. At least the power change will actual be able to be felt throughout the entire band.

I am really liking this development Ed, solid reliable power across the board. Going to loop my shop in on this thread to get them thinking about the work now. What's your install plan, how much of the work do you intend to do yourself? REALLY kicking myself for not giving you a heads up that I was going to be in town now we could have gone over some of this over a frosty......BTW full body scanners not running today, O'hare was screwed up enough with the regular security process in place :)
