Jbaker1121's FX50 updates and photo thread

Just got a new set of tires put on last week. (factory bridgestone duelers) Dealer was running a special so got 1 tire free. I forgot what it's like to have full tread, as mine have been low for a while. Ride got a little better.

been in talks with a guy out in Texas who wants to buy my car for asking... we will see what happens.

My extended warranty expires soon too.

Can't believe I've had this car for almost 5 years! just hit 53k miles this weekend.... still love driving it. Took a short trip an hour up this weekend on some backroads and the Taconic parkway.. the fall foliage whizzing by while shifting gears with the paddles, the sound of the v8.... it was a blast.

You never get tired of driving an FX50

Not really. Every time i go to test drive something else, I keep comparing it. So what it may have tech that is a little outdated, but I haven't tested something with the same sort of driving experience without giving up one thing for another....

I just drove in a fully loaded Jeep grand cherokee the black edition. Looked sweet and inside was surprisingly awesome. Very comfortable seats and I really liked the ruggedness of it. Maybe the FX50 is just a little too smooth of a ride for me...too boat like of a feeling lately at least.

Too smooth!? I think the 50 has a harsh ride - but a "sporty" harsh ride. Rides like our 06 SL500.
However I've always got the feeling mine is especially harsh for some reason because I drive my grandfather's '10 FX50S often and it's much more comfortable.
My 50 feels like it's always in the sport suspension mode.

Maybe you need an alignment, and check your tire pressure ;) I just got new tires and the dealer bloated them to 42psi, felt like I was driving a 90's 560SEL.
Took them back down to 33 and back to actually feeling the road.

also, forgot to mention - milestone in any car guy's life. My girlfriend actually complemented the way the 50 sounds. We were driving some windy backroads and I was having some flappy paddle fun... "very sporty, it sounds awesome" -- coming from her, who doesn't care about cars, is excellent. This is the same girl who thought my car was broken at first because it was loud....

That's a good feeling - when someone who doesn't know jack about cars says wow your car sounds amazing! It's the little things, right? Comparable to telling your girl that you like her shoes or some pedantic, shallow crap like that lol

haha I suppose.

I go out the other day to pick up my gf from work (at night)... car completely dead.

"oh great" I said to myself.. battery died again in the cold. My FX hates the cold.

I jump it, drive around. all the electronics are freaking out and the car feels like it wants to just die..

I get it back home, sleep on it. Go out in the morning, car dead again.

I go to put the booster pack on the battery... the negative battery cable was half way off the terminal....

I hate myself

good news is, it's tightened up and running like a a dream once I saved all my settings again :-/

mod bug biting again.... updated my thread about custom diffuser/splitter.... ;) see here: #12

another thread made me think that since my warranty just expired, may as well mention all the bad times I've had over the years....

My Extended Warranty just expired at the end of 2015.... so, here were my "issues" over the last five years

Only "issues" i've had with my FX50 have been covered under warranty and fixed by dealer:

(in order of occurrence, as far as I remember. I do not think there were many more but I am picky and if something was up I tried to get it fixed)

0) OEM 21" wheels had pitting around center caps, had the whole set of wheels replaced under warranty.

1) Side mirrors shake at highway speed (known issue) ; Fixed by dealer under warranty

2) Transmission reflash TSB due to "searching" and some rough shifts at low speeds ; Fixed by dealer under warranty

3) "D/DS/+-" sensor on my shifter went out. Would go into D but not over to DS/+- ; from "aggressive shifting to DS"; Fixed by dealer under warranty.

4) Front OEM AERO lip fell off of car while driving at speed - Dealer replaced and installed under warranty (they installed it initially)

5) Axles needed to be lubricated due to "noise" when engaging gear at low speed - done by dealer under warranty

6) Part of my cooling system on the front of the engine had a pinhole leak, I think the 'water outlet gasket"- due to the cold buffalo temps apparently.. Under warranty

7) TSB Steering column, done by dealer and covered by warranty (with 3 free alignments afterwards because they didn't get it right the first times)

8) Sunroof moving much more slowly, motor replaced by dealer under warranty

8) Center console cupholder folding wood cover won't stay closed, $2 plastic part broke, covered under warranty and will be put in by dealer.

I think that is all. The Cupholder piece just came in.

Other than those warranty items, the FX50 has really been a solid car. I take care of it, meticulously maintain it, keep it clean, but also drive it like the sports-focused crossover it was meant to be. Even with my playing around with the exhaust tuning etc. I have not had any issues.

Only thing that comes up is in the dead cold winter, I'm talking 20deg and below, the battery seems to die quickly and needs a slight jump just for the V8 to turn over. I had the dealer go over the entire battery system, alternator, test for parasitic draw, etc. etc. they had the car for days. No issues came up. I've been through the original infiniti battery and 2 duralast batteries since 2011. (i'm on the 2nd duralast) The Buffalo winters are what got to me the most, as far as issues like surface rust on the undercarriage, the battery being dead multiple times, the cooling gasket leak, and I'm guessing the axles needing to be lubricated also have something to do with 2 winters in Buffalo.

other than that, I truly do love this car and despite wanting to sell it to the right future buyer, I will gladly keep it til it dies.

Just hit 55k miles.....

I've had similar issues with mine over the years, but had to fight the dealer countless times for warranty work and mistakes they've made. Also had to replace my batter and that wasn't covered by warranty either.. Now thinking of getting a Optima RedTop as it has a high CCA, good for V8s. and it comes with 2 or 3 year warranty.

No matter the battery mine hates weather below 20 deg. If I dont start it for 2 days it hesitates to start up the 3rd day...

Fresh oil, balance, alignment, keeping her fresh.

I just accepted a job offer in Stamford CT so will have a 25-60 min commute each way.... with a year left on the warranty looks like I might as well keep the FX50.

I have been playing around with the idea of trading it towards something or getting something on the side, but I'll have to see what the commute is like.....

that's a huge difference in time

The 25-60 minute commute will be 'nice' knowing you're in that 50 with that booming sound system!:smile (2)::good:

Just got a new set of brake pads and rotors in from Ed (Zebra555) - Slotted Stoptech Rotors and Hwk High-performance street (HPS) pads.
Going to have them installed next week along with a new set of spark plugs, the 60K service, paint correction/detail, and having my wheels re-sprayed.

Pics to come soon :)

^ Those brakes are killer. almost no fade after my ~40 min (each way) highway commute even with my aggressive driving.

updates...Will probably bite the bullet on coil overs, or a new set of wheels. haven't decided yet. I probably need a set of winter wheels though so I have been shopping around (370z 19" 'twist' deisgns with blizzaks?)

more dealer fun: my transmission pan rusted around the plug hole, oil was seeping out - got it replaced under warranty. Damn those Buffalo winters....

Otherwise, haven't changed a thing on the car. despite putting miles on her (just hit 66k) because of the commute, I'm happy to be driving it each day still.

66k and counting... I guess I'm not really "low miles" anymore!

I have the same brake setup. works great! already been through a winter with them and no squeaking!
