JBAKER1121'S FX50 EXHAUST thread

SO I've been doing a bit more research...

From the videos that are avail (like 3 total) the resonator delete sounds pretty good....hopefully somebody comes out with a better vid though.
I spoke to damayor (kenny) and he thinks that the 50 with a res delete wont sound that great and may reduce low low end torque....and recommended maybe finding an aftermarket midpipe to use instead (like I was thinking before)

I look up g37 midpipes....nothing besides a few full exhausts. Tanabe apparently has one but it only comes up as R&D when i google it.....
and only has a y-pipe....and the only thing that pops up for 370z midpipes are the megan DRIFT exhaust, HKS midpipe, Meistershaft, and a few others, most are part of a full exhaust.
Im still not sure what I want to do. Find a midpipe from one of the exhausts? A knockoff of one of the exhausts' midpies? or just delete the resonators?

need to do some more research, including trying to convince current FX50 owners who did the res delete to get more videos up

Is your exhaust the same diameter as the 370z?

Posted from my BlackBerry using BerryBlab

Pretty sure, like how the 1st gens were all the same.....I could essentially buy a g37/370 exhaust and slap it on, and extend the tips just like on the first gen

so I'm thinking of just cutting off the muffler (I mean, unbolting it and removing it) and running straight pipes from the resonators....

I have been trying to search the topic, but people always aregue the yes or no question:
Will removing the mufflers 'reduce' 'backpressure' enough to cause a loss in power?

or, will removing the mufflers create more velocity within the exhaust, but shift the torque curve slightly up, thus causing the butt dyno to feel a "loss" in power? But meanwhile there is a slight increase in mid-upper hp (2-5hp?)

The borla to me just sounds like straight pipes with HFC and no resonator, and there are no high-quality microphone recordings/videos of the exhaust. (plus I do not really want to spend $1400)

There is a video or two of a muffler delete/straight pipes but the video/sound quality sucks...and there are a lot of 'custom exhaust' videos (usually just a resonator/muffler delete, cat delete, test pipes, straight pipes axle-back, etc) but people either do not include enough detail or do not respond/answer/give detail when you ask exactly what they have done to the exhaust.......

What do you guys think? Any v8 veterans out there? I have read up on camaro/mustang/gto/etc forums and people do muffler deletes and some claim a gain, some claim a loss, some claim nothing but a louder car...

The problem also is, i don't want it to just be LOUD, I want it to actually have a nice note, since it is basically silent now....so I'm not sure if straight pipes would sound nice or just make it loud with no real sound improvement.....I do not want it to sound like a muscle car, I just want it to have a decent exhaust note!

:skull:

I'm with you on your questions man.

I'm taking mine into Uprev Friday to look at possibilities (suspension and tuning) and possible exhaust work. The real problem with exhaust work... is that you won't know if it's worth doing until you do it, and have spent the cash. It would really suck to spend a bundle only to see gains in one area but drops in another.

However with Uprev being able to do a tune it could change things quite a bit.

But I feel your pain!

exactly, Im happy that uprev has the tuning map for these now....whenI do a few things Im going to get it tuned :wink (2):

yesterday I was at the shop that will be doing my straight pipes-- we took the muffler off to see how it sounds and really sounded pretty nice.
Not muscle-car v8 sounding, just a louder exhaust maybe a bit louder than a broken-in OEM exhaust from the first gen... it's comparable to a performance suv like an ML63 or a cayenne turbo s sound, it lets you know there is a v8 there tuned for performance but it's not obnoxious.

It should sound great.

I ordred all mandrel bends and new OEM-style rolled tips and should be getting this done mid next week.

They said it should cost around $450 and that's on the high side, it could be less.
I think the price is pretty good considering the 3 bends, the flanges, and the tips.

just got home, took them 4.5 hours to make up the pipes but they are perfect. They bolt right up tot he factory flange, use the factory exhaust hangers, and the tips are factory-looking (a little more round, they are magnaflow tips). It's all TIG welded and it's aluminized piping. They came out great.

As for the sound, it sounds really really really nice.
The lower RPMs are a little loud, bass-wise, but in a good RPM range (above 2k) it's a nice sound. It did end up a little louder than I wanted/was expecting but overall I think it sounds great.

here's pictures of the pipes themselves, I forgot to get one of them on the car itself and by the time I left the shop it was dark so didnt get a pic of the actual tips on the car.
Overall I'm happy. The price came out to a little more than we agreed on (like $150 more with tax) but I'm happy with the quality fo work, the guys there were cool, and the finished product came out great.

p.s. the reason a section after the flange has a 'darker/older pipe' was because the flange on it was the perfect size for this application, off of a corvette muffler (this is a corvette shop) so we just re-used it, the metal and flanges were in good shape.

I may put the muffler back on until I go back to school, I know it's going to bother my parents (not only the noise, but the fact I've 'wasted money' on my car 'again')

They said if there are a few people interested they would make a couple of these avail for sale, as a 'muffler delete kit' for the FX50/FX35.

Pics of them on the car will be up tomorrow and I'll try and make a vid over the weekend.

Looks like they did good work. I shudder to think how viciously loud that system is under load...

Very nice man

Thanks

Looks cool. Look forward to sound clips.

I'm excited to hear it too, I only drove it back from the shop and was in a hurry so idnt really "listen" I just know it's a lot louder than stock.

Yeah their work looks great. Like i said, Haven't really "listened" to it, but it's loud, maybe even louder than I want to be honest....

so my laptop died and my PC doesnt recognize my camera....so the videos will be postponed until my laptop is back online.

really want to hear it and see the video. What shop did you go to?

I went to corvettes of westchester. They have really good feedback on a bunch of forums besides one guy with a tranny issue; but their exhaust work was top notch. I tried it out and they did a really good job; they are in Ossining.
