Jbaker1121's FX35 updates and photo thread

update:

Just ordered the tires for the GTR wheels....

Yokohama Parada Spec-X 295/45/20 rears 265/50/20 fronts

I have the same tires on my current 20's so why not get the same ones if I like them?

Also, I am still deciding what color to go with for the GTR wheels. I was thinking a dark dark dark dark near-black gunmetal: black at some angles, greyish at others
or a metallic black that turns gunmetalish in the direct sunlight....
I've been searching the web for car colors that are close to what I am aiming for, but it will probably come down to a custom color, or one chosen out of a paint brochure that John (turbocad) will provide for me (he is painting the wheels)

anybody know of a place online I can browse through paint colors?

JB, I actually looked at OEM paints on cars. This is also something you can do in person, ya know? In fact, you can go onto a Nissan dealership lot, Ford dealership, etc... then try to find a color you're interested in.

FWIW, the Mitsubishi color called "Phantom Black" sounds similar to what you're looking for. It really looks weird, like it's black but not black if that makes any sense.

This is a Phantom Black Evo X at the car meet yesterday:

When I had my stock 20's painted, I remembered really liking the Nissan Maxima / Infiniti QX56 color that looked like a very dark gunmetal, so I just looked up the paint code for that car and that's how I found it.

The guys who painted it sucked and while the finish was gorgeous at first, it chipped up like crazy shortly thereafter. I would have a ton of confidence in John that he knows what he's doing and that painting wheels is a different story than painting body panels.

Can't wait to see it, going to look sick. I was thinking Advan has what you may be looking for in their dark gunmetal, looks black to charcoal based on the angle ... I tried searching for a color # real quick for you but had no luck.

that phantom black looks cool...

painting wheels can be anything from crap all the way up to just as durable as powdercoating & even more so if done right... from what JB has told me in comparing his PC 18's to the 20's that I painted for him, the painted wheels actually chipped much less than even the PC.... it's all in the prep & the materials used...

I don't do a lot of wheels because most don't want to spend the $$$ it takes to really do them right, jb gets a nice discount though  & many believe that PC is automatically better which is really not always the case...

I would always assume that per dollar, powder coat holds up a lot better than paint based on my own personal experience.

I paid almost $100 a piece to have my wheels painted and ended up chipping right away. My local powder coater quoted me $100 a piece to have my wheels powder coated. I've seen my girlfriend's wheels and how they've held up after a few thousand miles, powder coated by the same guy I go to, and not a single rock chip...

Would an extremely durable job done by yourself (John) cost much more or on par with $100 per wheel? The advantage of a durable paint job instead of PC is the limitless option of colors, whereas with PC I have to thumb through swatches :embarrassed:

painting one piece wheels the right way usually averages out to ~$150 per wheel depending on a lot of variables... because it is all prepped by hand it is not the same as powdercoating in that one price pretty much covers everything. pc they just sandblast, then pc & bake, but to paint takes more prep & then depending on what's on the wheel to begin with sometimes it'll just need a sealer & sometimes it'll need an epoxy primer, best guestimate would be $125-$150 per wheel...

yeah man John knows how to paint
I am really liking that phantom black....
I was thinking...
what about

Phantom Black Metallic?

I was also thinking of the BMW Metallic Sapphire Black...it's kind of similar.......

John, what do you think? (since you get to do it....lol)

that phantom black looks really nice

I know I really like it...time for a PS!!! lol:tup:

yeah so it was a beautiful night and I needed a break from studying...So after one of my review sessions I went to this spot my friend shot pics last time (the night shots) and got off some sunset shots, etc. I edited some of them because the pictures were kind of noisy....no tripod + low battery + studying all day = so-so shots.....

DO IT! Go to a Mitsubishi dealership and say you're really liking the Evo X MR in Phantom Black, be able to see it up close and in light and at different angles, then take it for a test drive

You'll thank me after (if you're able to test drive it)

Yeah the lighting sucked, but turned out so-so given you were working with what you had. I actually like that last one you edited because it's like emerging from the shadows, very subtle. Only thing that would make it better is if there was more stuff going on around it to draw some attention away to give it an even better illusion of emerging. Again, probably another one of those "work with what you got" situations though.

Actually I take that back, this one is awesome, lighting and all.

here's a few quick chops..... if somebody wants to try and color edit the one with the plain alloy gtr's, please feel free to....I can never manage to get a gloss finish on color
changed unless it is already gloss...
I know the rear wheels need to be set in a bit more since they are staggered....but hey, that's a pita to do lmao and I couldnt find a ref. picture at that angle.

thanks man! I cant wait to get them on (will most likely be right before the throgs neck meet....so new i cant even wax them yet!)

I don't think the wheels need to be set in more. They stick out in the rear a good bit.

I agree. I meant the center caps compared to the spokes. on the rears, the center is sset it a bit more
