Is this how manual mode is suppose to act? And how do you use manual mode?

I was cruising on some back streets and doing some fun driving. As I was driving I pushed the shifter over into manual mode and downshifted and it went from third to second gear and the RPM shot up to 4500 RPM. Then I downshifted one more time again and it dropped down to first gear and the car wanted to come to a stop and it slowed down.

I'm wondering why does the car want to slow down when dropped into first gear? And Why do the RPM's shoot up like that when downshifting? I notice all cars with manual mode do this. And is manual mode idiot proof? Like could you damage the engine or tranny using it improperly? Someone told me the only way you could damage the car using manual mode is if your redlining the engine, which I've never done.

Whatever gear I'm in and I downshift, I feel the car pull harder and acceleration is awesome. But when it downshifts to first the car wants to stop.

Supp man,, well thats the way it is man manual mode is like driving stick,, when you dawn shift the rpms will ram up and you will have more accelerition power... Then agine you can be driving around and then you could down shift and the car can slow down you save break pads,,

it sure feels good to do that but isn't very good for your tranny. So hold off your temptations and drive safely. try to down shift at high speed and the massive torque might take you for a spin.

My fx45 has revmatching but not my 35. I use tiptronic all the time. Should hurt your tranny at all. It's meant to be driven in tiptronic. It won't let you down shift to a gear that is too small for the speed.

I've dropped it into 2nd around 70 mph. That way I look like a badass and don't use my brakes when slowing for an exit ramp. :tongue (2):

In all seriousness, my tranny has lasted 2 years and about 20k miles of manual mode driving and seems fine. I've gotten used to downshifting to slow down while braking. If you don't want to slow down, hit the gas more when downshifting.

When you hit first in manual and the car chokes out where does the tach try to go? Is the sudden power drop off a function of the rev-limiter?

Hey you don't have to worry, its called downshift rev matching. it Blips the throttle to give it a aggressive growl, and just use it like you would use a manual, but no clutch

^ that what i think its happening. If you hear that aggresive growl and see the tach needle jump up it means that your downshift at too high of a speed so the car automatically adjust the rev to match the right rev for the lower gear. and your car slows a bit cause you are in a lower gear. It a built in feature equivalent to heel toeing in a true manual with clutch, yes no?

Ahh I see thanks for the info. I knew that the car had downshift rev matching, but never understood what it really is. So I'm guessing the throttle won't blip like that with cars not equipped with downshift rev matching???

I took it out for a spin again today testing the manual mode on some back roads near my house. I downshifted from 3rd to second 2nd again like yesterday and this time the rpm's didn't jump up crazy like before cause I wasn't going at a high speed. I guess your right ThreeZero about downshifting at too high of a speed which is what caused it to do that yesterday.

I think when stirring the gears yourself the car acts more like what you want it to. Or just leaving it in driver's sport mode is good too cause it holds the gears alot longer than regular drive mode.

I got one question though. What is "Adaptive Shift Control", and what's the "Driver's learning algorithym"? The manual says that the FX has this equipped feature for the transmission.

That's exactly what it did when the car was downshifted. I guess I'm not a total idiot lol haha. I thought it was hard on the car, so I was worried.

probably just fancy terms to say that the automatic mode (D) adapts to your style of driving. like if you drive like a grandma the car would learn that vs if you drove like you stole it.

imo doesn't really work because the 7 spd software is still hither by the hesitation problem.

my previous ride either didn't have auto rev matching or it was broken. If you down shift with that car and an inappropriate speed sometimes the tranny won't let you down shift or the times that it does you hear a HUGE clunk and some grinding tell you that you fucked up. Could be just that car but i've had many frds that broke their manual tranny and/or their engine because they were being an ass and down shift without heel toeing or by accident at a very high speed from say 5 to 3.

I've been in a passenger in cars where the driver is learning how to heal toe. You can tell when they are doing it inapprioriately by the sound of the engine, and when they did it correctly it sounds exactly like the nice growl you get in the fx when it auto rev match. I don't think it would be harmful for your car unless of course the feature somehow breaks and you continue to downshift aggresively as if the auto rev match is still there.

imo the down rev matching is more of a safety feature, most modern tiptronic have it so people that doesn't know whats going on won't accidentally break their car. This is just base on my limited automotive knowledge. Do correct if i made any mistakes.
