Is Royal Purple for real???

Ok so last Saturday at 52k miles I switched to Royal Purple 5W30 from Whatever regular oil the dealer uses. I noticed an immediate horsepower gain when I hit the street. Did not think much of it and thought is was psychological. So today I drive it to work and there is definitely a horsepower gain. I was driving along not even thinking about it and felt some extra juice and recalled that I had switched to that Purp.
 
i was always curious about this. more details?? :smile: where did you get it?
 
Pep Boys actually carries it now, but you can get it on Ebay or Amazon for much cheaper with free shipping. Potomac Falls? UR a DMVer, U should join our next meet. Got my oil changed at Tysons.
 
I've switched to RP about 6 months ago. I've seen tests done in the shop that does my work and the stuff really works.
 
Im going to be at the dealer on Friday getting some things done, probably drop by Pep Boys and see if I can pick up a few quarts and get my oil changed with it.
 
I have been on Royal Purple for a while. It is surely different and much better than any other oil that I have used (Mobile-1, Infiniti stock oil, some other imported oil that I can't recall).

However, it is recommended to use Royal Purple on the new car. The reason is RP has very good penetration, so on the older engine (that implies to engine that has very high mileage and 10 years old), you may end up spotting oil leaks. However, it is good to use RP to check engine leak as well.
 
even if it does work, RP boasts a 1-3% HP gain. not to be a pessimist or whatever, but, i doubt that you are really feeling 3-9 HP..........

with that said, though, i'm not denying that it is a really good product for what it is.

Wow thats impressive guess next oil change I'll be trying some.
I'm running Mobil1 Synthetic 5w-30w now would it be the same as 5w-30w with RP?
 
I've used RP on my last 2 oil changes. I can't say I have noticed any real difference, but my engine seems to run a little smoother. Only thing I can say I have noticed is the temp on the oil gauge is cooler then when I was getting my oil changed at the dealer. I know they were using 5W30, just don't know what kinda of oil.

I'm still up in the air about when to change the oil though. They say to change at 3K at first then progress to 5K. So far I changed it at 3K cause they say you have to get the other oil out before you run straight RP.

Anyone have any info on that cause it would be really helpful?
 
I once did some reading on oils and these are what I could remember:
  • Amsoil, RP and Pennzoil Plat are all very very good full synthetic oils
  • RP has an extra additive that promotes extra lubrication but wears out after a while
  • On older cars, RP is not that much of a good choice (can't remember reasoning)
  • If you change your oil in close intervals (like we do generally @ 3000-3500 miles) RP's additives will be refreshed more often and it'll be better used
  • If you tend to change your oil in 5K+ intervals, RP's additive will be less useful

I'm using Amsoil for the last 4 changes and I like it. Was going to go with Mobil1 but reading that it's no longer full synthetic (they had a case against Castrol I believe that they lost and they're no longer full synthetic but claim that), chose Amsoil

i believe it isn't a good choice for older/higher mileage cars because with the make up of the RP synthetic, it could find a "leak" that may not be present with regular oil. it's designed to get into everywhere to super-lubricate everything.

also, RP recommends not changing your oil for 7500 miles. it's part of what they boast about their product and how it can save you money, time, and be more eco-friendly. part of their secret is that the product won't oxidize as quickly as other oils will so it has a longer life-span.

Yup, that was it.. I think if I ever switch to RP, I still wouldn't wait until 7500 miles for a change.. I think 3500-4000 is a good range.. Not like I'm making 30K a year anyways..
