is it a good way to fix our fade or crack window trim?

The factory black trim around the windows can be brought back to life with some rubbing compound. Typically found in the waxes and cleaners aisle of the auto parts store. The rubber around the door can also be cleaned with paint thinner or alcohol. I had to do all this to my 04.

The chrome trim would cover SOME of the black trim, but not all of it.

Save your money and time. The auction says its universal trim and you have to measure and cut them yourself. It will look bad most likely. Best thing to do is: DIY paint them, get a bodyshop to paint them or purchase the OEM chrome trim which is very expensive. Rubbing compounds and other products are just temporary fixes.

hey pros, thanks for the comments and the link from MTN FX!! it looks awesome!! but another concern of mine is the crack on the trim. i know the kit you mention can treat the fade part, but im still having a headache with the cracks. so, should i go to dealer and ask for a possible warranty on that part?

window trim is not covered under the extended warranty, only under original manufacturer..
Mine is cracked from two places, you cant make a car perfect..

True, just try to make it sa good as possible. I've read through some posts here and learned that they might be under warrant, but it really depends on the dealership. So, I'm thinking to ask them and try my luck! ;)

Hey guys, sorry to kind of thread jack an old thread but this is sort of related. (Also, I can't post a new thread until i have worked on my rookie status on this forum.).

The black rubber molding around the door frames on my FX have some scuffing and small tears. Eventually this will lead to leaks. I have a tube of black silicone adhesive and I was going to apply it tonight. Thought I would throw this out there and see if anyone found something better to use. The other drawback is that full cure takes about 24 hours.... that's a long time not to close your door. TIA.

My trim was cracked and the pervious owner painted over it gloss black without prepping the surface. I want to sand it down to get rid of the cracks and paint it gloss. Will this work?

It may work, but that's sure a lot of sanding. The factory surface that cracked is more like a vinyl overlay on the metal, and you can remove it (somewhat) easily by using a razor blade along the edges and peeling it off. It may help to use a heat gun or hair dryer to heat it up as you slowly peel off, sort of like removing window tint. Your results may vary, but I suggest trying this out before sanding...

Unfortunately most of the laminate layer has been baked on and even a heat gun wont help. The cracks are in the laminate layer, not the black layer, which is painted on. So yes, sanding is going to be the best way to get rid of the cracked laminate, but be careful you dont go THROUGH the black layer to the metal underneath. If you do, repainting is going to be the best bet.

I was able to sand, without repainting. I used 1200 grit, red scotchbrite and then Meguire's ScratchX polish.
