Intake vs stock

So i just bought a 04 FX35. decided i better get to know her a little better, so with a oil change and filter, cabin air filter, spark plugs and intake filter. When i was doing the intake i started wondering what is the advantage of a cone style filter with the pipe? the stock is more of a forced air and its not very restrictive except the tubing.(at least from what i can tell) the after market is just a open filter that can pretty much suck air from around the engine as well(warmer = better fuel milage) (colder= better performance) so to make a long story short, why do the cone filter style? looks? sounds? fill me in guys, id love to hear some opinions.
 
cone shaped make the air spin while it goes into the tube and into the TBS.

and haveing the cone makes a whistle noise also
 
isnt he asking what the cone shaped filter on the intake does?

doesnt it spin the air while it goes in the tube??
 
^^ Both the intake filter and the venturi ring doesn't spin the air. The ring is smooth. It just allows more linear air flow and prevents turbulence.. The whistling sound is there because air passes through a mesh instead of direct filter element contact.. The only thing that spins the air is the throttle body spacer if you have Dave's type..
 
Foam Filter

That Perrin Performance link for their foam filters........LOOKS awesome. Same air flow as the K&N types, but better filtration. Is this true?
 
By cone i mean like a cold air intake cone filter instead of a flat filter like the stock one. So just wanted to know what you guys thought of a stock box and filter vs a cone style filter
 
Why not a stock box/CAI combo ? I have an LMS tube mated with the stock box, and a K&N panel filter...brilliant !!! :wub: Better breathing, and sound.

Bro whenever you get a chance PM me telling me how you put it together, I being wanting to install a cool air intake.. And I like your idea.
 
Here is my understanding of the subject.

Having the stock box defiantly deadens the sound of engine coming though the intake, but it restricts the air going in by lengthening and restricting the flow. The "cold-air intake" is for shortening the distance which air has to travel to get to the intake manifold. This not only promotes better breathing, it also reduces the travel time of air particles. The less time the air stays in the tube, the cooler (therefore denser) it remains.

As for the Factory box/CAI combo, it works well because it sucks in the air from outside the hood which is a lot cooler. This is the reason some manufacturers, like JWT, have a Heat Shield to block the radiant heart from the engine block.

I believe Nissan Sports magazine did a write-up on the subject where they found the best combo would be a Z-tube, JWT air filter, and the Stillen Air-Ram/shield box.

Not sure how anybody else did it, but I just took a maf adapter and screwed it onto the stock box, cut the lms to fit and that's it. If you don't want to cut up your lms this is probably not a thing to do. I don't have this setup anymore.

Oh.. So it didn't perform well enough? I like the looks of it, it looks like a well thought out OEM..

lol... tha whistles go WOOOOOO!!!

The only thing that makes the air spin is the TURBONATOR +45 MPG devices. Like Jeff said, more surface area.

Also, venturi rings do not spin the air either. Again, that's the TURBONATOR +45 MPG. Venturi rings work on Giovanni Battista Venturi's principle of a fluid (air) going through a smaller diameter which will drop pressure, and as a result raise velocity. The purpose of venturi rings are to raise velocity, and you can find them coupled to the base of some cone filters and on each individual intake runner in a Cosworth plenum.

A friend of mine made an adaptor to connect the tube to the box, and a rubber seal to go in between the tube ad the box. We had to enlarge the hole in the box to fit the tube which was a little bigger than the factory opening. Nothing else was altered. So there will be no problems if I wanted to put everything back to stock. The only difference will be the slightly larger hole in the box where the tube inserts into. Hope this helps.
