Intake Air Temps

Did some test runs of a couple intake setups to get an idea of the temp differences. Measurements were from my bully dog tuner which reads the IAT's from the diagnostic port.

Would like to do more setups, but don't have anymore so if you have a certain intake and a way to measure the temps... post up.

wow interesting? im pretty sure this can be measured using the scan gauge from the iS raffle. Going to check the stillen CAI time permitting...

interesting results.

Updated with results:

I. Measured w/ a Scangauge II (yay for iS Raffles! supporters rock) that connects to the OBDII

Date: 10/6/2010
Intake Setup: UTR Polished Tube & Stillen CAI w/ Airbox
Outside Temp: 60 F
Intake Temp: 67 F
Difference: 7 F
Driving Time When Recorded: 10 Minutes
Driving or idling: Driving (40 mph)

Notes:

1. Satisfied with the Stillen CAI w/ airbox's performance. The difference was much less then expected.
2. When IDLING, the intakes temperature climbs pretty fast up to 80 or higher. Pretty intuitive as the heat from the engine is just spreading everywhere as the car sits still. Once driving however, the intake temp shot back down to 67.

hope this helps. If anyone wants other tests let me know. I may do a test without the airbox soon

II. Measured w/ a Scangauge II (yay for iS Raffles! supporters rock) that connects to the OBDII

Date: 10/7/2010

Outside Temp: 50 F
Intake Temp: 57F
Difference: 7 F
Driving Time When Recorded: 10 Minutes
Driving or idling: Driving (40 mph)

different temp.. consistent difference.

Nice, only a 7 F difference with the stillen and probably better airflow. Will update the list later, might have to get a stillen shield again.

thanks jeff...

finally hit a red light today (first in a few days haha!) and after 30 seconds the intake shot up to 125F!!! Going to legit test over the weekend. first going to try to remove dings with dry ice

Even though the stock airbox keeps the temps cooler, I don't have that same high end kick I did with the open cone. The stillen looks like the best choice so far....we need more intake tests.. Also I have a fram air hog in the stock box.

agreed that more tests would be nice.

if your in the NY area w/ an intake other than stillen or aem dry cone, and want to do tests, shoot me a pm! =)

this temperature is measured at the mass air flow meter itself which is right behind the air filter, so it is not affected by anything down stream from the mass air flow meter, these #'s won't change with a z tube or a plastic vs aluminum type difference on the intake tube itself. it's basically measuring how well the airflow is isolated from engine compartment air while moving/driving and/or standing still

sometimes cooler but way more restricted airflow is not as good as a lot more airflow potential even if it happens to be a little higher temp, this is why most CAI's will show better top end even though the intake air is now hotter. best of both worlds would be better isolation from engine compartment heat along with better air flow too... little custom ductwork & shielding may do it

Thats funny after reading this I switched to my stock box (k&n panel filter) with a z-tube. I think my fx feels torquier...more importantly I noticed my mpg dropped 2mpg with a open cone intake than with the stock box.

There are some variables..I do have a trottlebody spacer and have dei heat tape on the stock box side facing the engine. I'm more than pleased with this set-up for sure.

For shits n giggles I'll be throwing on resonated testpipes that should give me some more top-end.

Do you have a pic of the dei heat tape on the box? I might try and coat the inside of a Stillen with some heat shield material if I could find a cheap used stillen.

I'll take one tnite...got it advanced auto...like $20. I simply covered the back side of the stock box to deflect engine heat. Pic coming tnite.
