Ignition Problem!!!

2mhheyemd: i didnt see you mention the camshaft sensor. it was the problem with my fx. fixed it myself.

I'm sorry for my lack of knowledge. What is a camshaft sensor and what does it do? How do you change it and what is the cost? Please advise. Thank you, k3fir!

Sorry your still experiencing this problem months later mhk! I have been very fortunate not to have that issue yet or any mechanical one. But when I read the first page of posts, it seems like only people with '06 models are having this issue. I remember watching a video on youtube where a guy couldnt start his car too. It was an '06 at the very oldest.

Actually heres the link for the video:

Yes, it cranks for a while but does not start. However, it doesn't have that "puffing or delayed reving" like this video. When it finally starts, it starts like normal. I have no freaking idea!

If the cam sensor is damaged for whatever reason then if will show a code for it when the consult II is hooked up to the FX. Did the dealer get this error code when your FX was hooked up to the consult?

2mhk: cam shaft sensor is a part of the ingnition system which as far as I know controlls the amount of the RPM (rounds per minute).. so when it fails - you get exactly what you and i (before) got - it shuts off on the road sometimes and after that - cranks but doesnt start.

go to any shop or dealership that read codes - this is the best start and its free. it only takes 1 minute. once you know the error code ( or codes) - you will know what it is exactly.

costs around 75 bucks (! damnit) shitty little piece of plastic. if you know what to do takes you 20 minutes. if its your first time - plan to spend like an hour trying to detach the broken sensor. also it depends on which side of the engine it is on cause there is two *bank*s. let us know the error codes you are getting and i can link you the FAQ or a tutorial that helped me.

mhk, you said that your car started strong when you had the headlight turned off. At your last episode of not starting, was your headlight on or off??

This is a very good thread and thanks for the details and sharing. I just got an 07 FX35, and this is my first Infiniti. So, do I have to bring it to the dealer to hook up the consult II?? Do they have the consult II in AutoZone or O'Reily, etc??

I changed my battery about 1 month ago. Now, I don't have that weird, hesistated start anymore in the morning when my headlight is on. I think that was from a bad battery. I had my battery changed under the factory warranty. Since I posted my last thread, I stopped by my dealer to have them read a code out of my car. They told me that they got the "NATS" code...I think...which simply means that my I-Key failed. They recommended to reprogram both of my I-keys. Again, I had my I-key reprogrammed before at a different dealer. They did not find any mechanical issue or any other error codes for my last ignition issue. I had no more ignition problem after that one moment. My daughter's daycare is right next to a police station...I'm just wondering if there are some interfering radio frequencies with my I-Key...I don't know. It's a big mystery with my car. If anyone knows what NATS malfunction (P1610 - P1615) is, please tell me. I just want to see if my dealer is correct with recommending the I-key reprogramming.

Any resolution? I am having the exact same problem with my '03 FX45 w/ 80k miles.

Happened for the first time about a yr ago... cranks but doesn't fire... behaves as if it had no fuel (or bad fuel pump). Walked away, tried it again w/in the hour, and fires right up. The last two times, the car actually sputtered while driving, and upon parking the car, dies. It then doesn't crank.

Happened last week, now yesterday.

My thought is that it could be a bad fuel pump, clogged fuel lines, injectors, or cam sensor.

However, I read on another forum from someone w/ identical symptoms that it ended up being a AC Amp, which is part of the Hvac system. Apparently, the car's electronics runs through it... retail is $426.

Anyone?

Any other news on this?
My wife just called this morning, and said it took her 3 tries for the FX35 to crank over (2003 - 75Kmi). She said that it cranks loud and sounds strong (not a battery - it's newer) - I would guess a fuel system issue.
I really don't want to start throwing parts at it - I'll start with the cheapest though and go from there.
Anyone pulled a Fuel Pump themselves (on an FX35)?

Did you get a service history with the FX?

LOL....a few oil change receipts. It was 5-6K below blue-book. I was kind of expecting a troubled car - which I don't mind (wouldn't prefer - but gambled) because I will do everything myself.
The previous owner said he did the 60K service through Infiniti in Beaverton (now at 75K)- and at first I didn't believe him, but after draining the diffs last weekend - I now believe him. The diff fluid was pretty new. He said he replaced the brake pads about 10K back - and I confirmed that as well. He didn't turn the rotors (which is a no-no) but I'll do that next time. I suppose if I really cared I could call Infiniti and ask....but I'll just start replacing everything for peace-of-mind. (and some FX35 knowledge)
I checked on the fuel-pump, and it looks like an easy replacement.
I've been tinkering with the FX all day - and I can't get it to hard-start - not even once.
We'll see.

Just to let everyone know that I've been having the starting problem for the past two years and recently every single time i start my car it took 2 times every time to start. So I did alot of research and finally decided to buy the AC Amplifier and it seemed to have fix the problem. Now my car starts up like a champ like a brand new car. It cost me 344.00 but it was well friggin worth it. I was hesitant on buying it but I'm glad I did. Just wanted to let everyone know. I installed it on saturday and havent had the starting problem at all. Ill follow up in a month and let everyone know how it goes.

I'm new here, been trolling for a while...sorry to dig up an old thread :) I have an 06 FX 103k that had the same problem today. Tried to start and finally let up...hit lock/unlock on the intelligent key and it started up right away. Does anyone else have any other input here? Since it only happened once for me, I'm not too worried, but if it continually happens I'd like to have a line of attack. Has the AC Amp definitively solved the problem?

I have a 2005 FX35 RWD with the same symptoms. It won't start intermittently. It cranks but doesn't start. Sometimes it will goes weeks without a problem. Sometimes it will crank but not start. It always starts eventually - sometimes after 5 minutes, sometimes after sitting overnight. Two mechanics gave up on it and referred me to a dealer.

Here's what I know.

I just replaced the battery myself.
Driver's seat adjustment motor also stopped working.
After an episode of not starting, the AC resets to 75. The radio does not reset.
Once the LCD panel went blank for about one minute while I was driving. Didn't seem to affect anything else. Then it came back on.
I have two sets of keys. It happens with both of them.
It's been very hot and dry here in LA, so I don't have any data about cold or wet weather.
I re-installed the battery cables after doing a very thorough job of cleaning the terminals. Didn't help.

The last mechanic found these codes: P1610, P1614, C1704, C1705, C1707, C1726, C1727, C1729, U1000. They think it's the immobilizer, and referred me to the dealer.

I seems like the ground cable problem I saw on other posts.

Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated!!!

Thanks,

Mike

Have you checked the ground cable? It's easy enough to follow (the main one). All of those faults could be caused by some weird electrical issues.

The dealer said it was my after-market key, which somehow sets off the immobilizer when I use it - shutting down the car for some period of time as a security feature. They re-flashed the software. The problem hasn't returned now that I only use the original key.

If it happens again I will check the ground cable. Thanks!
