ICON-TV Full Integration Nav

So i've been searching around for a while now, trying to integrate an aftermarket nav with the colored screen of the FX. I installed the Garmin GVN and it works pretty well. However, I get annoyed everytime I have to use the remote. I been trying, aimlessly, to find a way to change the stock screen to touch screen. The only option that it seems I had was moving the stock screen (which Turbocad scared me away with the price..I think he said about $6k or more:eek.:)

So I kept searching, and the other day I came across the ICON-TV nav online. They make the claim that their plug and play nav can be integrated into "any Nissan/Infiniti with colored screen." They also claim that the nav would work as a touch screen in the FX. Now I was kinda skeptical about this claim, b/c as I said before, I've been looking for a while now with no success. So I called a guy over at iconenterprisesinternational.com to find out if this product would work as a touch screen on my 2008 FX, or if I would need to use a remote. He told me that it would "most definately" work as a touch screen (no remote needed).

Now the reason for my post...I wanted to know if anyone in here had any experience with this product, and whether this guy is right about the touchscreen capability in the FX. I tried searching around and found some reviews online, but I am not really quick to trust those reviews. So I wanted to present it to the Infiniti family here to see if anyone had any experience with them, or based on your knowledge of the FX, is the claims made by this company credible. I don't doubt that it would be touch sensitive in the 2nd generation FX (see YouTube - 2009 Infiniti FX35 Navigation Interface); however, I haven't seen an illustration with it in the 1st generation (or at least 06-08). So, in conlusion, I am basically asking if anyone here has any information on the product and its capability to work as a touchscreen in the 1st gen FX.

Then I ran into this video that increased my skepticism (i apologize for the music  , it's not my video) YouTube - Infiniti Fx 35 DVD TV DIGITAL GPS

Please let me know what you guys think.

Saw that vid on youtube a while back... Looks almost too good to be true.. Looks like they're using a NavTv in combination with a GPS unit, but the real interesting thing is the touch screen.. I didn't think that a non-touch unit can be converted into a touch screen.. I wonder if they have a dealer near Chicago I can go check out.

interesting. I don't think its possible to to turn a non touch screen magically into a touch screen.

But i don't mind using a remote like the second vid if it doesn't involve moving the stock screen

spoke with the installer today. the way it works is that there is a thin overlay that comes with the kit that would make the screen touch sensitive. I'm thinking i want to give it a try, but i need to unload the GVN and Nav-TV I have installed now.

just a random idea I think the g37's have the same size screen as us and its touch not sure how different the harnesses and compatibility would be but it could be worth a try

Any info on the cost of the whole thing, including parts and labor?

The cost for the product and installation with the guy i spoke with was $1399.00. however, he did say others were doing it for $1,699. Now the way how this works is that you have to get the product an installation done by an authorize dealer for the warranty to be effective (or so the guy said). What you would need to do is call the guys at iconenterprisesinternational.com and they will have a dealer from your area contact you.

This got me interested, thought I'd dig a little deeper..

Just spoke with Albert at IconTV, he's telling me a GPS + DVD module that would hook into a First Gen screen and behave exactly like the video, touch screen and all would run $1950 (he started at $2999 but dropped it to his "dealer price" lol)..

Here's the real trip! He claimed that 70% of people would be able to install it on their own, to which I replied that I would (loosely) agree, however wiring the overlay for the touch screen functionality would prove to be difficult for most, to which he replied "there's no overlay, it's just a module - nothing goes on top of your screen"

...what?

Does this guy not know what he's talking about, or am I the moron that doesn't know of this magical method to make any lcd screen touch-sensitive. Damn, if that's the case I want this "module" for my 46" LCD at home!!
Awaiting an email from Alberto w/ specs and detailed info - will update once received.

For those wishing to contact him,

You can tell him Arthur w/ the fx referred you (we built a decent relationship in our 15 min convo..:tongue (2):

EDIT: Forgot to add, he said that since he doesn't have an authorized dealer in my area (Toronto), he'd honor the warranty even if I had a local shop do it..

Well if it's just a "module", you could just buy the navtool, gps unit and that module and do it yourself.. Cost you less than 1K.

So he did not confirm that there is an overlay for the screen? Did he tell you how it would work as a touchscreen if there was no overlay?

Found the video I was looking for

YouTube - INFINITI FX GPS TOUCH SCREEN

so this mean it is definitely possible

He said with full confidence that there is NO screen overlay but that it's simply a plug-n-play module.. The conversation was as follows after this:

Me: it's not possible without an overlay using our stock screen.

Him: It is.

Me: How?

Him: It's a module that makes it work.

Me: But that doesn't actually enable the touch screen functionality right? You'd still need an overlay for that no? You know, like a clear layer affixed to the front of my screen to register touch input?

Him: No, you just need the module.

Me: I don't think that's possible but ok.

Him: We install these things all the time, that's how they work.

Me: gotcha..

LOL

Ok, so I got this done this weekend, and I must say I am highly impressed. The device is a full touch screen device, and it works perfectly (exactly like the last video posted..only that my button fit on the screen). There is an overlay over the screen, but you can't really tell (only at certain points when it is really sunny outside, you can tell that the color is a little dim b/c there is an overlay).

I'm going to try to post a video showing you guys how it looks. I must say I am happy with the work that was done, and if anyone is interested and in the North Jersey/NYC area, you should give Dave over at Model Electronics in Ramsey, NJ a call (he had the lowest price of all the installers I spoke with).

Here is a review I did of the device in the vehicle. I messed up on the name of the company that installed the device...It was MODEL ELECTRONICS (not Audio Electronics).

But here it is (the quality of the video is kinda crappy b/c I shot it with my phone):
