I Want A Aftermarket Alarm, But

I have Intellegent Key, and I dont really want to walk around with two remotes in my pocket. The wife and I are thinking about purchasing some rims and I know that an alarm is going to be a must. Do I have many options as to what I can do? Can the infiniti factory alarm system be upgraded any? Also what are some brand of alarms you folks have had great sucess with? I have a Viper 791 on my Impala and its good, but I dont really like the remote or the range. I used to have a brand called Mannix and its range was exceptional.

Thanks

I hate it when I see people that have to have 2 remotes, it's ridiculous. most times it's just because of an installers incompetence to be able to integrate the OE system with the new, & thereby eliminating the need for the original remote in the first place... I'll get customers drop off there car to me & say, "OK, first use this remote for *** then, hit this one for****", completely unacceptable & unprofessional installation, BUT, with an Ikey, that is the exception really.

you can not eliminate the Ikey remote & still use the fx keyless, so this means that no matter what, the Ikey needs to be retained. it is possible to have the Ikey activate an aftermarket alarm & it is even possible to have the Ikey activate a remote start, thereby eliminating any other remote necessary. the limiting factor there is the range though... if you want very good range then the Ikey will not give you that by itself...

Ikey setups are the only setups that really will require carrying 2 remotes if you want all the benefits & range a good 2 way FM alarm would provide, & still keep the keyless Ikey setup... the good thing is, if installed correctly, you still should only need to use ONE remote to activate & control the whole system, which would then be the remote for the aftermarket system, you shouldn't have to even ever touch the Ikey remote at that point, the aftermarket alarm should control the factory system as well in a proper install, but the Ikey will still need to be present for it's 2 way confirmation & allow keyless ign use. at that point you can think of it as not even a remote, as you will not be using it for any remote functionality at all really, but it still must be present.

hope this helps...

Thanks Turbo!! Great explanation. To clarify, your telling me that I can have an aftermarket alarm installed w/ remote start and be able to control it with my regular IKey fob!? How would it be possible though? Would it be necessary to even get a 2 way alarm system if the IKey remote cant use those functions anyway?

Thanks

if your planning on controlling the whole thing through the Ikey, then you don't want a 2 way fm unit, as it will not work at all being controlled with the Ikey & even if you could get it to work you would have none of the benifits of a 2 way system anyway at that point.

I have never installed a system that was completely controlled by the Ikey, but I do know for certain that it is possible and has been done sucessfully... I doubt your planning on installing this unit yourself, so I would suggest you talk to your local shops that you are considering for this install & see if any of them can tell you, yes, I can do that.

really good installers are few & far between, I do know a guy in ny that I could recommend that has done this very setup several times on several fx's, but being in texas I don't think that would help you much... I know if I had to do such an install then I would research it & figure out how exactly to do this, but I've been out of the install game for many years so I don't have the exact procedure at my fingertips.

basicly a good installer will have either done this before or at least have the competence to research it & figure out how to do it, it can be done, now who can do it may be a little harder to find really... I closed my install shop way before anything like Ikey even existed, so I have no actual experience with it personally.

when I do my install, I will use a 2 way spread spectrum fm system & use the aftermarket remote to control it. personally I want the increased control and monitoring a good 2 way provides, & being able to check & monitor status of the vehicle from half a mile away is the reason for me to install in the first place... it bothers me that I will have 2 remotes, but I will not consider the Ikey a remote anymore...

I can completely uinderstand your desire to just have it all controlled by the Ikey though, I guess long range control & monitoring is not worth the hassle of 2 remotes to you. personally I will probably disassemble the Ikey & change the format of it's casing to have no buttons, not suggesting that to you really, but that's my plan anyway:biggrin:

good luck finding a decent installer, don't know anyone in texas to recommend to you though...

Thanks again Turbo! I personally would like to have the 2 way remote, but my wife and I both like the IKey fob so we dont want to have to scrap it so early into the cars life!! I just dont know what I should do at this point. Someone help me with the direction that I should take!

I never really understood how are factory alarm works, the I-Key as well. I know most factory alarms do go off unless you open the door, it doesn't trigger when someone breaks the glass because it doesn't any shock sensor like an aftermarket alarm does (unless the FX has it, I'm not sure).

As far as the I-Key is concerned how does it prevent anyone from stealing it? Let's say for example, every morning after I get dressed to go to work, I go outside and warm my FX up and I go back inside with the keys in my pocket. Say if someone decides to steal it, will the engine stop once it senses that the I-Key is nowhere near the vehicle?

That is a good question. I'm gonna have to try that when I get home!

jc, in that scenario a person can open the door to your FX and drive off with it. But once they turn the engine off they will not be able to start it up again without the ikey.

no, that's why I want a remote start, if you start it with the Ikey then someone can jump in it & drive away... when they shut it of they won't be able to restart, but that's not very comforting really...

btw, sensors can be added to the factory system, if alarm is your only concern then just add a tow sensor to protect the wheels & a glass breakage sensor & you don't need to add an alarm... adding a system is more for remote starting than anything else really... the fx already has a factory sytem that beeps the horn, but not enough sensors to protect wheel theft... a good guy can even install a siren on the oe system too if alarm is your only concern.

Because were going to put some rims on it and I want some added security!

may, then I suggest just getting some locking lug nuts when you buy your wheels as they will need the special tool to remove the wheel once it is installed. I think for that purpose it is a cheaper alternative and a peace of mind.

NY alarm installer

If it's possible could you give me the contact information on the person that can connect the Ikey to an alarm system. I just want to be able to arm my fx35 so that the windows and tires are protected.
Many thanks in advance.
Dennis

well as turbo said it can be possible to add a alarm system to the FX and SYNC with the Ikey. i was looking for a post i made a long time ago.. Is about the Viper alarm that can be sync with the Iphone and you can use your iphone to control it..that way you dont have to have 2 remote for the alarm.. the phone will be your second remote.. i being thinking about this for a while.. but i have a few other Mods to take care of first.

Found the name of the alarm Viper smartstart.
