I was trying to get my subs to work by themselves to test them out but when I fade the channels I don't hear anything. anyone know how to test them out?

What kind of amp are you using? You could just temporaraly disconnect the mid/high speakers or if your amp has a low pass switch set it to low pass on the main speakers.

you can try fading and also turning the highs down on the head unit, maybe find a bass heavy song

Are you talking about the stock sub, or an aftermarket unit?
For the stock sub there wouldn't be any way.
For an aftermarket unit you can just download test tones which hit anywhere from 10hz all the way to 200hz and see how she hits.
