How to Clean Both Throttle Bodies

No issues here after opening it. I'll admit though it's hard to open but I didn't use a stick to hold it open like Turbo suggested. I just used my index fingers to keep the flap open long enough to get inside.
 
I just had some new ECM update done while my car was at the dealer for the seat repair. Has something to do with how the engine idles. Can't wait to pick her up in the morning I misss my FX but this JX is awesome!! Such a fun ride for a big crossover.
 
hmmmm maybe I somehow got this ecu update then! Let me know if you notice a difference and notice it idling at 550 is what I noticed right away....sometimes at 600, but sometimes as low as 550....before it was always 650 or more depending on if a/c was running then even higher.

It's a big difference dude. Let me know if you notice the same! maybe our transmission problems are over!? I haven't had enough time to test, but the trans is shifting a ton better and engaging quicker when needing it to and that's in regular mode!!!
 
That doesn't sound right Jonas. If it's idling at 550 it shouldn't be. I'm looking at the factory service manual and the VK50VE in your FX should be idling exactly at 650 + an additional +50 RPM when the AC is running. 550 seems kind of low.

The update I had done was to correct my car idling too low. It was sometimes idling around 600 when it should be running at 675. When it was idling too low it was making the car shake up and down. Sometimes when I would turn on the AC the car would stop shaking because it up'd the RPM. Manager told me there was some software reburn to fix it.
 
car is running more smoother now and idling lower. Not sure what to say....or even desire a change since it seems more at it's natural area.

I'll drive it more and see if I notice anything more.

Thanks OP very helpful post. Did the TB my 2004 FX a few years ago and needed specifics for the 2009. When shifting into drive sometimes my FX tries to lurch forward, good thing I have the brake on becsasue it feels like it would take off. I assume this could be a transmission issue and not related to TB. Any other experiences like that with the FX50?

I just finished cleaning the throttle bodies on my 10 FX35. Mine hadn't been cleaned for 72000miles. I started noticing last week that at idle it was oscillating about 200 rpm. Also, when I started it and put it into gear right away the idle would drop to about 400 or less and come back up by itself (like it was about to stall).

The job wasn't very hard at all. There was only one surprise though. I didn't realize that coolant runs through the throttle bodies. Oh well.

For mine I completely removed them for cleaning and did move the butterflies but, was careful not to let them close hard. I also didn't disconnect the battery. Runs like a top now.

Can a mod fix what Ian modified on my diy I made. I didnt even realize it was changed. You do not need to disconnect the the neg battery cable to clean the butterfly valve manually. You can actually leave it plugged up and clean it. Disconnecting the battery wouldn't even help anyways. All it does is make you lose memory and radio presets which is just plain annoying.

The battery has no effect on if the ses light will come on or not when manually cleaning it. All you do is just be gentle opening it

thanks for the write up OP. Had problems before with car shutting down after starting for the first time. Found this thread and tried it today. Haven't had any problems yet, will tell more after driving for a few weeks.

Cleaned out the throttle bodies today being now almost 100k. They were definitely dirty and the car noticeably idles better. No battery disconnect and I was pretty aggressive with the throttle bodies holding the butterfly valve open with my fingers several times cleaning the butterfly valve edges too that were very dirty. I was just very careful when closing it and all worked beautifully.

Learned my lesson to respect those sensitive butterfly valve. Mine throw a code after the cleaning and I could not get the right timing with the pedal dance for the reset - so many failed attempts.

The only thing that kept me motivated and persistent to get it right was a $1500 quote from the dealer. LOL

i'm at 43,000 miles and never did a throttle body cleaning. smh. i have experienced the car shutting down after first start thing. i am scared doing it for the first time by myself, i am a visual person (pictures help but i would rather see it done in person o fully get the idea). will any of you guys that have done it and live in nyc be at the next meet-up? If not i would probably go to turbocad since i've dealt with him before (painted my grill and tails). seems like i can do it for sure but king of hesitant especially talking about a $1500 quote if i fuck things up. lol
 
So I read around about the throttle bodies and it's been rumored that the reason these throttle bodies malfunction after cleaning is because they are forced open against their correct orientation when opened (bottom flap either left or right)

Unfortunately, I don't know or can't see which way the flap moves when the throttle is stepped on
 
You'll know which way it opens because it will already be open slightly when you remove it because it never is completely closed. So you just continue pushing open in the way that it is already open. It's really easy...I'm not even close to a mechanic and it was really easy to do.
 
I've done it twice already; second time about two months ago. Definitely idling better.

hammermill, I had the same issue of the car not starting because of the idling dropping too much right after start...this happened only once and after cleaning it haven't had the issue again.
